Actor Aaron Paul Joins Global Poker League as Wild-Card Selection
Famed Breaking Bad actor Aaron Paul will join the LA Sunset as a wild card selection to play in the inaugural season of the Global Poker League.
Sunset Team Manager Maria Ho made the official announcement earlier today and told PokerListings that Paul is exactly what she was looking for in a wild card selection.
“I’m stoked that he’s going to be joining us,” said Ho.
“Obviously there are a lot of high-profile celebrities that love poker but I think Aaron not only brings a passion for the game but also a level of entertainment that we want for the GPL experience.”
Paul will join Fedor Holz, Olivier Busquet, Eugene Katchalov and Chance Kornuth on the LA poker squad
“I love poker as a game and mindsport so I’m excited to be part of this new eSports league," said Paul. “Representing the LA Sunset together with some of the best players in the world should be a blast.”
Maria Ho to Play for Sunset
It wasn’t a foregone conclusion but Maria Ho will be stepping out from behind the bench as Team Manager to play in the GPL herself as a wild card pick.
“It was a last-minute decision,” explained Ho.
“I was actually considering getting another wild card that was kind of outside the box. I wanted to see what the dynamic of my whole team would be like before I decided to play. I was trying to make the best decision for my team.”
So far only Andre Akkari of the Sao Paulo Mets and Philipp Gruissem of the Berlin Bears have opted out of playing.
Ho made her wild-card selections much later than the rest of the GPL, which confused some poker fans last week since there were actual GPL matches being played.
It took some negotiating but Ho was incredibly happy to finally get Paul on board.
“I think people were kind of wondering where the celebrities were,” she said.
Renowned for playing Jesse Pinkman on AMC’s Breaking Bad, Paul has actually been a poker fan and player for years.
LA Sunset Trending Up
The LA Sunset finished the first week of the GPL with nine points anchored by a standout performance by heads-up monster Olivier Busquet. The team now sits fourth in the six-team Americas conference.
Ho is very pleased with what she’s seen so far from the team.
“I wanted to get skilled players — which I think I did — but I also wanted to get personalties and people I thought would be entertaining to watch,” she said.
“I think I have one of the most skilled, talented, charismatic, articulate, funny and entertaining groups out there.”
