First GPL Season Runs April-Nov w/ Summer Series, Wembley Final

The Global Poker League released the schedule for its first-ever season today with a few intriguing surprises.

Starting next Tuesday, April 5, the season will comprise 15 weeks of action spread over eight months and culminate in a two-day live final at SSE Arena, Wembley.

Also included in the schedule is a 33-day Summer Series from June 6- July 8 with daily heads-up battles filmed live in the GPL studios in Las Vegas.

The regular season will run April 5-Sept. 22 with playoff dates after that still to be determined. The Wembley Final will be held Nov. 22 and 23.

Regular season play runs from April 5 – Sept 22 with three match days per week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Play begins with the 12 teams squaring off in six-max battles for the first eight weeks.

The Summer Series begins June 6 - parallel to the World Series of Poker - and features a heads-up match every day until July 8. Weeks 9-12 return to six-max play before the final two weeks before the playoffs switch back to heads-up.

The GPL Playoffs will take place sometime in October/November with the Global Poker League’s ‘Final 8’ playing down for four places in the live Finals at Wembley.

A key part of the GPL plan is to enable live betting on the action, which is why the League settled on London for its first Finals:

“London gives us the opportunity to build a fully immersive, interactive experience for the GPL Finals," GPL CEO Alex Dreyfus said in a release, "thanks to its regulated online sports betting environment.

"We are going to connect fans with one another as well as the GPL players at a leading entertainment venue. The experience is more than just ‘sit and watch’ – its full engagement.”

After the first-ever live draft Feb. 25 where the Team Managers picked their first four players, Managers have announced their two wildcards picks this week to round out the teams.

Sam Trickett, Todd Brunson, Jonathan Jaffe, Igor Yaroshevsky, Alex Luneau, Bill Perkins and Dan Cates are among the additions. Check the full schedule for the first season of the Global Poker League right here.
