How does the combination of small buy-ins and big prizes sound? Exactly! These words are music to the ears of real money online poker fans, and great value online poker tournaments are what any self-respecting online poker operator should be trying to provide.
Step up Americas Cardroom (ACR), who have just announced the latest addition to their already impressive offering, which also features an excellent range of No-Limit Hold’em and Omaha cash games as well as entertaining Sit & Go fare.
New Great Value Tournaments Every Day at ACR
The shiny new Daily Double tournament promotion, launched on 30 May, is designed to give players the chance – every day – to win life-changing sums of money for a small investment.
Consisting of two sets of daily multi-table tournaments that start 30 minutes apart, the first set is named after ACR Team Pro Michael Loncar and the second is named after fellow ACR Team Pro Jeff Boski.
Each tournament pays out a massive 98.5% of the prize pool daily, with the remaining 1.5% used to feed a separate progressive jackpot… This special feature means that players can win part or all of the progressive jackpot by reaching the final table or winning both Loncar or Boski tourneys on the same day. Note that the jackpots are paid out in addition to regular tournament prize money.
The legendary Chris Moneymaker, Team Pro at Americas Cardroom, had this to say about ACR’s latest player-friendly promo: “Poker players are always looking for a little extra excitement and, of course, the chance to win a big chunk of change. The Daily Double accomplishes both, especially with the new progressive jackpot.”
Moneymaker also pointed out that, while both jackpots are expected to grow big over the first year, the Loncar jackpot is expected to surpass $100,000 in that time. The $88 buy-in Loncar tournaments come with a tasty $30,000 guarantee for the Monday-Saturday editions, and the booty increases to $50,000 GTD on Sundays!
Keep your eyes peeled for bargain basement priced satellites, including for the $40 Million Online Super Series which is still ongoing…
As the saying goes: If at first you don’t succeed, try, try and try again! This could be applicable to all sorts of things in life, of course, but is particularly relevant in tournament poker, where even the most talented players have no control over variance, nor how often – or for how long – bad luck keeps on coming. You could also play brilliantly, but so can others in the tournament, thus denying you that much-wanted victory.
The wait for success can be a long one, but it doesn’t take anywhere near as long in real money online poker as in traditional casinos, of course, due to the fact that you could theoretically play a dozen online poker tournaments simultaneously, while that’s not the case with live poker tournaments which, rather inconveniently, require our physical presence. Having said that, your writer has witnessed an albeit young and physically fit poker pro win a tournament while playing in another at the opposite end of the casino, but such feats are rare, and not the most practical form of multi-tabling…
Good Things Come to Those Who Wait
Canadian poker pro, Daniel Dvoress has already established himself as an elite player, with a very successful career that has earned him millions (over $26 million, to be exact). Remarkably, although $7,000,000 of his haul came from Triton Series events over the years, he went 17 Triton tournaments without winning. This is all the more bizarre given that he managed to reach 16 final tables!
But good things come to those who wait, as they say, and this finally happened to Dvoress at the latest Triton Super High Roller Series in North Cyprus. There was one last roll of the dice for the World Series of Poker bracelet winner in the shape of the No-Limit Hold’em Short Deck event, the final tournament of the festival. Despite a smallish field of 29 entries, the $20,000 buy-in generated a whopping $580,000 prize pool.
As well as the tricky format, Dvoress also had to overcome the legendary Tom Dwan in the heads-up battle for the title and, to add to the burden, was on the wrong side of a 2:1 chip deficit.
As it happened, he was up to the task, winning $214,000 for first, but also the long-awaited title and trophy, plus the Shamballa Jewels bracelet to add to his jewellery collection… Dwan, meanwhile, pocketed $148,000.
Tom Dwan had to settle for $148,000

Events Galore for Fans of Poker Variants
As I write this piece in late April 2023, there have already been three events featuring mixed games tournaments, the Malta Poker Festival is in full swing, and I am looking ahead to several events already confirmed that either feature mixed games or are chock full of them. If this year is anything to go by, mixed games poker is on the rise in Europe.
What Already Happened?
In February this year The Festival Series visited the excellent card room at Dusk Till Dawn, Nottingham, England. As always at a stop of this series, there was a huge variety of gambling opportunities offered. Several poker variants and casino games were offered in tournament format.
Also, in February there was a Kings of Tallinn festival at Olympic Park Casino in Estonia. It featured a good number of mixed games events on the tournament schedule. I attended that festival and wrote a blog that you can read here.
A quick look at the results pages on the sites of the above two festivals reveals that one man, Tuomas Roppanen of Finland, managed to win the 8-game tournament in Tallinn then take down the Sviten Special tournament in Nottingham. He also narrowly missed out in Nottingham in the 4/5/6 card Pot Limit Omaha event, in which he took second place. Awesome performance for the Finn, who might well be a player to watch out for.
Then in March there was the Poker North Masters and Norwegian Championship, held at Card Casino, Bratislava, Slovakia. A venue I have played at in the past and a schedule that started with four days devoted to six mixed games tournaments – with a few other mixed games tournaments dotted into the later parts of the schedule – this was a festival I was sorry to miss!
Right now I am spending my days – and nights – playing mixed games cash at the Malta Poker Festival. On Tuesday 25 April I hosted a HORSE tournament at the Festival, and this was a huge success. My role as host is as the face of a group of 4 mixed games enthusiasts and we are calling our group Donkeyfish. Our purpose is to expand mixed games both by encouraging operators to put on events and spreading the word among poker players about the love we have for all things mixed.
Figure 1 Donkeyfish Group – from l to r Jeremy Tan, Martin Smith, Wouter Schuurbiers and Jean Cassar Parnis
There was a bounty on each of our heads in this tournament – the player who knocked out each one of us received a copy of Getting Started With HORSE Poker by Chris “Fox” Wallace and Michael and Robert Mizrachi, signed by “Fox” himself. My bounty was collected by local player and massive character Raymond Galea, who prevailed in a hand of seven card stud. I was all in on third street and drawing dead by sixth street!
Figure 2 Presenting the Bounty to Raymond Galea
The tournament attracted 54 entries and was popular with local players as well as people who travelled from overseas to take part in the Malta Poker Festival. The structure that was developed by Portomaso Casino was excellent. Early play meant something, by which I mean the levels did not start too small and therefore discourage players from turning up for the early levels. But betting limits and antes did not climb too steeply, and this meant there was play all the way through. At the end of it all, the winner was local favourite Antoine Degiorgio. Antoine is Maltese and is the main man for poker on the island – he represents the interests of players in taking issues to the casino operators, promotes the games that are being offered by those casinos to the players and runs the Malta Poker Fish Facebook group that is very active and popular among the poker community on this rock.
As well as the tournament there was a Super Dealers Choice cash game table running for the whole week. For those who don’t know, Super Dealers Choice means any poker variant will be played if the rules can be clearly described, and the players and dealer can understand them. There were Fixed Limit, Pot Limit and even Half Pot Limit games chosen! Some people brought games we had never heard of in Malta (Pompey Ducks, anyone?!) and a couple of new games were invented. This might sound somewhat daunting, but the players are friendly and not only describe the games but also give a few tips to help new players to avoid falling into traps.
A huge thank you to Portomaso Casino and Ivonne Montaleagre of the Malta Poker Festival for helping us to put these games on. Look out for further Donkeyfish offerings later in the year and beyond.
Looking Ahead
The Festival Series Malta
May 2023 sees The Festival Series come to Malta for the first time. This will be held in Portomaso Casino, Malta’s premier poker venue. I predict this will be a huge hit for the locals as well as an event that will draw in a good number of players from all over Europe. Martin “Franke” von Zweigbergk is the head of The Festival Series operation and anyone who knows this larger-than-life character is fully aware of his passion for the gamble. His festival schedules are packed full of opportunities for gamblers to take a punt, not only at the poker tables because there are also Blackjack, Roulette, Slots and Sportsbook tournaments.
There are also a few Pot Limit Omaha tournaments available, including a 4/5/6 card affair on May 18 (€250) and a PLO/PLO8 mix on May 19 (€125).
From my own experience at The Festival Series in Bratislava in October 2021 I can predict that there will be some amazing cash game action to be enjoyed. Of course, there will be No Limit Hold Em for the GTO grinders, and Pot Limit Omaha for the many enthusiasts that will be present, but there is also likely to be Super Dealers Choice available. With the expected attendance of many players from Sweden I expect Sviten Special to be offered as a game as well.
A feature of The Festival Series is a Cash Game Challenge: every day of the festival sees two feature tables run for a specific length of time and the person who wins the biggest number of big blinds in a session throughout the week wins a generous package to a future stop of The Festival Series.
Battle of Malta (BOM)
This is a popular long-standing festival for midstakes players in Europe and these days is held in Casino Malta. Up to this year the BOM schedules only featured No Limit Hold Em and Pot Limit Omaha tournaments, but for the first time the Spring 2023 offering includes a HORSE tournament. This will take place at 9pm on Friday 2 June with a €200 buy-in.
The full schedule for the Spring edition of the Battle of Malta 2023 is available on the Hendon Mob website.
Poker-SM Live
The Swedish Poker Association’s live Swedish Championship 2023 will be held in Bratislava, Slovakia between 14 – 21 August. Sadly, the mixed games events – Sviten Special, Draw, 8-Game, HORSE and Chicago – are not open for non-Swedish nationals to enter. Nevertheless, I am assured that cash action will be plentiful for mixed games players.
ETOP is an Italian operator that puts poker festivals on in a number of locations and also organises poker cruises. From 2 – 9 September this year there is a Special Edition PLO Cup that will be held while aboard a cruise ship taking players around the Mediterranean Sea. The cruise starts and finishes it journey at the port of Marghera, near Venice, will take in some of the Greek islands and will call at Bari on the return journey.
As well as the Pot Limit Omaha main event, players can try their hands at other poker variants including Sviten Special, Omaha Hi/Lo, HORSE, Stud Hi/Lo, 8-Game, Omaha/Sviten mix and Omaha/Razz mix.
And That’s Not All…
I am sure there will be more festivals that feature mixed games this year that have not been announced yet. Some possibilities, none of which can be confirmed and some being more likely to happen than others:
I have heard rumours of a Summer weekend of mixed games in Malta. Nothing confirmed yet, no dates announced… but I am excited at the prospect and expect to have some input into the schedule if it does happen. If you have any requests for events you would like to have included please find me on Twitter @poker4leisure and send me a direct message.
Another rumour I heard is that the Autumn (Fall, for any readers from across the pond!) edition of the Malta Poker Festival will feature more mixed games tournaments than the Spring edition. I hope to be involved again as part of the Donkeyfish group.
This page seems to indicate there will be another edition of The Festival Series in Bratislava from November 28 – December 3. Franke has recently got into the habit of announcing the next stop of The Festival Series while an edition is currently in full swing. If he keeps to that habit we will no doubt have confirmation in the middle of May about this!
Finally, there are also rumours of a cash game weekend focussing on mixed games to be played in Bulgaria.
The Festival Series landed last week at the grand Portomaso Casino in St. Julians, Malta. The series, best known for its wide range of mixed games, had its fifth stop in its two-year existence. It promised to be a real spectacle with a big Main Event, mixed games such as H.O.R.S.E, 8-Game and OFC, but also the first Mystery Bounty event in the history of The Festival Series and of course our own PokerListings Championship was part of the crowded schedule. Three full months in advance, players from all over the world were able to qualify online and turned out in large numbers for this eccentric event, this time held in the Mediterranean sun.
PokerListings Championship
In previous editions of The Festival Series, the PokerListings Championship has always been at the top of the schedule, and this time would be no different. However, this time the event had no less than three starting days, a very promising initiative. They weren’t disappointed as 354 players eventually turned up, resulting in a €250 buy-in for a total prize pool of €76,464. Never before has the prize pool been as big as in Malta, and it eventually resulted in a first prize of €16,200. In the end, a Dutchman would walk away with the gross of the prize money, as well as the unique trophy awarded by The Festival Series, and of course eternal fame!

Younes Jarir Celebrates After a Class-Act at the Final Table
Younes Jarir, a Dutch poker player who also gave act-de-presence at The Festival Series in Bratislava in 2022, was also this time together with a group of friends who came to this event. As we know, this group of friends is always there to support each other when necessary, and this time it was necessary. In Bratislava, ninth place in this eponymous event was a disappointing end, but he was confident enough to blast through to the end this time. He was opposed by not the least players; Colin Lovelock from England, our winner from the previous edition, was actually playing with a good stack throughout the event. Manuel Blaschke, the winner of the edition in Bratislava ’22, was also there. So there were two players who participated back-to-back here to go.
No one could stop Younes Jarir, however, as he was determined to win this event and finally did so by settling heads-up with former champion Manuel Blaschke from Austria.

The Festival Series Malta – Main Event
The Main Event is the flagship of a tournament series, both online and live. Unfortunately, The Festival did not give a guaranteed prize pool this time, but this should not spoil the potential of this great event. It started with a quiet day 1a, in which 89 registrations were recorded, but eventually, due to a good turnout on days 1c and 1d, the total eventually came to 617 participations. The €550 Main Event, with so many registrations, within a prize pool of €296,610, is not bad for a tournament with no guaranteed prize pool! However, it was the second time in history that the event had no less than five starting days, and sufficient consideration was given to the working Maltese citizens.

The event had 617 players registering nicely, and with 193 players returning on Day 2, it didn’t take much for the fireworks to erupt. This included players who were still able to register two levels on Day 2, another unique element in this series, who started the day with just 10-15 big blinds.
Main Event – Day 2
In the end, 71 players would secure a minus cash in this event, a cash for €1,000. Oystein Brenden, a poker player from Norway, had enough chips during the opening day and day 2 and even ended the day as the chip leader. They would eventually end the day with 16 players. Here are the chip counts at the start of the third and last day of the Main Event.

Final Day
The moment had arrived; The third day of the Main Event. 16 Players returned and all eyes were on the first prize of €60,700. With a couple of notable names such as Jelmer Schuurmans, Andras Balogh, Luigi D’Alterio, and Oystein Brenden, it would be a potential battlefield right until the end. Poker fans from all over the world wouldn’t be disappointed, as many big pots went up and down.
Final Table – The Festival Series – Main Event – Malta
Nice detail, the final table consisted of eight different nationalities! The man with the largest rail, Oystein Brenden, eventually turned the battle in his favour by taking first place. Balasz Somodi, from Hungary, ended up being the runner-up for €40,500. Another nice fact, only Matthew Micallef from Malta managed to play his way to the final table from the last 16 with one of the shortest stacks.
The Main Event was a great success in Malta with 617 players.

Hospitality events at The Festival Series
Side Events
If you look at the schedule of The Festival Series, you’ll see that they don’t just focus on the Main Event, which many other tournament series around the world still focus on. Side events, and especially mixed games, are the most important factor for these series and it paid off big time this time. With 50+ events, there were an incredible number of events available to players, events that did not exceed their expectations can probably only be counted on one hand.
The side events that topped the Leaderboard were the €250 H.O.R.S.E (69 registrations), €125 8-Game (93 registrations), €1,100 PLO High Roller (60 registrations), €1,100 NLHE High Roller (70 registrations), €250 Open Face Chinese (38 registrations), and the €250 Mystery Bounty (201 registrations).
Martin ‘Franke’ von Zweigbergk
In the end, it was the founder of The Festival Series, Martin ‘Franke’ von Zweigbergk, who won two winners’ portraits. He won the HORSE and the CashGame Challenge. The Norwegian Coolbet ambassador Svein-Olaf Eidsaeter also managed to get two by winning the Win The Button tournament and the Mystery Bounty.

The WSOP is less than a week away, and if you’re not fortunate enough to be able to be in the Horseshoe, watching the action is something you cannot miss.
Seeing those WSOP-themed chips, the biggest and most notable players sit and battle it out to cement their legacy with a gold WSOP bracelet is the pinnacle of the poker calendar. Now, thanks to PokerGO, you can sit in the comfort of your home and have the best WSOP poker content streamed to your TV, laptop, and smartphone, no matter where you are in the world.
Whether you are in Finland, the Faroe Islands, Sweden, or St. Kitts and Nevis, you can watch the very best of the WSOP action as we shuffle up and deal into the summer. Here are some of the biggest events coming up this week that poker content lovers will not want to miss:
Event #2 $25,000 No-Limit Hold’em High Roller 6-Handed, June 1 @ 4pm ET
So, what makes this event a can’t-miss? The buy-in and being a high roller will attract the biggest and best names to sit down and battle. The six-handed dynamic will put this elite poker crowd into a format where opening ranges are wider, more aggressive actions are rewarded, and the play is faster.
Last year’s event was one of the most thrilling on the schedule, with US poker pro Chad Eveslage scooping a huge $1,415,610 for his first bracelet. The final table was jam-packed with names ranging from high-stakes crushers like Chris Brewer to social media content creator Antonio ‘SoFlo’ Lievano. Other names included WSOP 2021 Main Event Champion Koray Aldemi and Josh Arieh, who has 4 bracelets and a 3rd place finish in the WSOP Main Event back in 2004.
The final four would be Brewer, Arieh, and alleged cheater Jake Schindler, with Chad Evelsage maintaining a dominant chip lead to beat Schindler heads-up. Evelsage is a mixed-game specialist, with final tables in H.O.R.S.E., Limit Hold’em, and Omaha Hi-Lo, but it was in No-Limit Hold’em where he got his first WSOP gold.
Event #6 $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em / Pot-Limit Omaham, June 3 @ 8pm ET
The Mixed No-Limit Hold’em and Pot-Limit Omaha bracelet is a fascinating event, testing a poker pro’s two and four-card ability throughout the tournament. Last year saw a scoop by Brazilian pro Joao Simao, who won $686,242 after battling in one of the more intense three-handed battles of the series.
The final three came down to 2013 WSOP Main Event winner Ryan Riess and German high-stakes crusher Marius Gierse. Riess actually came into the final table as the shortest stack but maneuvered his way to the three-handed battle with some fantastic play and lucky run-outs. He lost a big spot with Gierse when his turned straight was bettered by Gierse’s rivered flush. Simao would overcome a 2-to-1 chip deficit to pull to an 8-to-1 lead, and the final hand of PLO would end the tournament when Gierse’s nut flush draw bricked, and the WSOP gold went to Brazil.
Event #8 $25,000 Heads-Up Championship, June 4 @ 8pm ET
One of the bracelets is geared toward poker savants, as the intricate game of heads-up poker has become popular over the past few years. Whether it was Doug Polk backing the truck up on Daniel Negreanu or Matt Berkey silencing Nik Airball, both to the tune of $1 million, heads-up is a common way to deal with poker feuds.
Last year, heads-up was a remedy for a US poker crusher who had not yet gotten his WSOP bracelet. Dan Smith would get through a tough field to scoop $509,717 and his maiden World Series of Poker bracelet, beating Christoph Vogelsang in his iconic Star Wars-esque hood.
In a field that included poker wizards like Kevin Rabichow, Dario Sammartino, and Chance Kornuth, Smith battled through the rounds to get a heads-up with the German online crusher Vogelsang and get his hands on his first bracelet.

Anyone who’s had even a passing interest in real money online poker over the years is aware of the extremely popular PokerStarsSpring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) series. The latest edition, which continues until the end of May, is awash with tens of millions in prize money, as well as the extra prizes in the form of bounties that the relatively new Bounty Tournament format produces (see below).
Winning anything is an achievement. Winning a SCOOP event is impressive. Winning two events is newsworthy. Winning two events on the same day is other-worldly! Yet this is exactly what Niklas “Lena900” Astedt managed to do earlier this week. First, he bagged the 508-entry, $530 buy-in Sunday Kick-off PKO (#73-H) to win $42,611, including $22,974 in bounties. Then, remarkably, he followed this up by winning another title in the form of the 433-entry $215 buy-in NLO8 6-max PKO (#76-M), collecting $16,022 (including $9,387 in bounties). This astounding feat takes the ultra-talented Swede’s SCOOP tally to a rather greedy eight, alongside Benny “RunGodlike” Glaser, Ole “wizowizo” Schemion and “Premove” – they need two more to catch Calvin “cal42688” Anderson, however.
Patrick “pads1161” Leonard
Another Victory for PADS
Patrick “pads1161” Leonard took down the $5,200 buy-in Titans PKO (#75-H) for a cool $197,117. What’s interesting about this is that $71,023 of this was first place, while $126,094 was earned in bounties! This is Leonard’s seventh SCOOP title (after first winning in 2017 and managing at least one each year since 2020!), and the win catapulted him to first place on the High SCOOP Leaderboard.
The Joy of Bounties
It’s a sign of the times – and a justification in online poker operators offering the masses plenty of PKO tournaments – that Montenegro’s “Premove” also gave us an odd statistic. When he won the $2,100 buy-in NLO8 6-max PKO (#76-H), he trousered $61,970 – this was made up of $18,798 for first place, and $43,172 (more than double!) in bounties. Note that this was “Premove”s eighth SCOOP title (and the second of the year).
Even those of us at PokerListings – where every day we witness the scale of real money online poker in terms of the money involved – can’t help but be amazed at some of the promotions run by online poker operators.
Having already sent players to both Vietnam and Cyprus earlier this year for their ambitious High Stakes Adventure promotion, they’re at it again! This time the ACR High Stakes Adventure bandwagon is set to head north, and at least five players will be going to London for a whole two weeks (27 July to 10 August) of fun and frolics and a taste of nosebleed stakes poker.
There are a guaranteed five High Stakes Adventure: London packages up for grabs. Each is valued at a whopping $125,000 and consists of the following:
$110,000 for tournament buy-ins
$15,000 cash for first-class/luxury travel/accommodation
Sell Your Action!
In a great twist for this six-figure promotion, ACR are offering package-winners an opportunity to guarantee a massive profit regardless of how they perform in London – you could play like the biggest ever fish or have the worst possible luck and still walk away from London with $55,000 in cash! This is because the CEO of Americas Cardroom is taking the ‘hands-on’ concept to the extreme, offering to buy up to 50% of the winners’ buy-ins for every tournament they enter.
Typical buy-ins for the London pokerfest will range from $15,000 to $100,000 (plus entry fees); it’s entirely up to you whether you sell zero or any percentage up to 50% of your action…
$125,000 London Package Qualifiers
As can be expected with ACR, there are numerous, affordable routes to London. The key final qualifier dates for your diary are:
16 July (2:05pm ET; $2,650 buy-in): 2 Packages GTD ($250K)
Check out the ACR Poker Lobby for satellite options.
Added $150,000 GTD High Stakes London Warm-up
The High Stakes Adventure promo will be ‘expanded’ to give everyone a taste of the special structure used in these events – as well as a chance of winning chunks of money! – thanks to the addition of the $150,000 GTD High Stakes London Warm-up tournament on 16 July. If you don’t play in London, you’ll at least have an idea of what to expect in ACR’s future High Stakes Adventures…

Given that the World Poker Tour (WPT) has enjoyed such tremendous success for such a long time, one wonders why it took so long to make a serious move into the world of real money online poker – especially in an era that has seen everyone and his proverbial dog getting involved.
Fortunately for poker players around the world, WPT Global (now there’s a fitting name for a modern online poker room) was launched in April 2022 as the online platform of the well-known organiser of megabucks international poker events. And what a great business decision this has proved to be – with great results for poker fans, who find themselves with multiple chances to turn online poker tournament success into a fantastic live poker tournament experience…
Win Your Way to the 2023 WPT World Championship
Any list of WPT events is impressive, and the year culminates in the end-of-season extravaganza that is the WPT World Championship… Now, WPT Global players have a chance to win their way to the (already) hotly anticipated 2023 edition in the poker capital that is Las Vegas.
Last year’s WPT World Championship, held at Wynn Las Vegas, boasted a $15 Million guarantee (the biggest ever), and the prize pool reached an enormous $29 Million. The eventual winner, Eliot Hudon of Canada, bagged more than $4 Million… inspired?
By diving into this impressive online poker room’s 84-Event WPT Global Spring Festival you could end up being one of two WPT Global players who’ll be sent to Sin City – read on.
Champion of Champions
The overall series champion – the Champion of Champions – will be awarded a coveted WPT World Championship place. All those who win a Spring Festival tournament will receive an entry to a special winners-only Freeroll on 11 June. Win that, and you’ll be sent to Las Vegas in December, thanks to a Champion of Champions winner’s package that includes a $10,400 (non-transferable) tournament entry plus $2,100 in travel expenses (put directly into the winner’s WPT Global account).
Second Chance
This is a catchy one! Reaching a final table in ANY Spring Festival tournament will automatically earn you a seat in the WPT Global Second Chance Freeroll(11 June). Victory in this event will see WPT Global pay your $1,100 buy-in for the WPT Prime Championship in Vegas plus $1,400 paid into your WPT Global account for travel/expenses!
Stephen Song, last year’s WPT Prime Champion, won a life-changing $700,000 and was named GPI Mid-Major Player of the Year.
With the 84-tournament WPT Global Spring Festival only just underway, you’ve got many bites of the cherry, so hit the tables and get ready for Vegas. In the meantime, there’s loads of money to play for…
As so often happens in life, the better things get, the more complicated it can become. The same can be said about the world of real money online poker where, as operators are falling over each other to offer the best deals, players are presented with new and varied promotions. Of course, this is a nice ‘problem’ to have, and once we understand the mechanics of this or that bonus, we can take advantage of it while enjoying ourselves at the tables.
An excellent, all-round player-friendly feature at partypoker has been the introduction of so-called partydollars to their poker offering. Some of you may already be aware of partydollars – also referred to using the P$ symbol – if you’ve played at partypoker or noticed the subject pop up in articles at PokerListings. However, being aware of something is one thing, but knowing properly how to get the most out of it is quite another, so in this article we’ll explain how it works so that you can maximise your partypoker experience.
What Are Partydollars?
Designed as a virtual currency, partydollars can be used to buy into poker games at partypoker across a range of games. Although the concept is not new, this particular version has been around only for a year, having replaced Tournament Dollars (T$) in April 2022. Until the change, the old Tournament Dollars could be used only to buy into multi-table tournaments with the equivalent entry fee.
Everyone Enjoys Flexibility With Partydollars
The flexibility afforded players by partydollars has made life so much easier. First, it’s no longer online poker tournament fans who benefit.
As well as being able to use P$ to buy into – and now part buy into! – multi-table tournaments and major online events such as MILLIONS Online KO, players can also use them to enter satellites, Sit & Go games, jackpot SPINS, and even No-Limit Hold’em and Omaha cash games… including the fastforward format.
Key Features of Partydollars
Importantly, partydollars can be used both fully or in part to buy into ANY poker game in the partypoker Lobby! In fact, it’s such a useful way of doing things that, unless you change your settings, P$ will be automatically used when registering for a tournament or sitting down at a cash table…
Note that on finishing in the money in a tournament paid for in P$, you’ll be paid in the relevant currency. Similarly, with cash games (and fastforward), P$ are essentially used as cash, so P$ put into pots is returned as cash (uninvested P$ being returned as P$).
Getting Your Hands on Partydollars
This can be done in numerous ways. As well as partydollars satellites, many ongoing promotions at partypoker award P$. For example, Round the Clock Freerolls prizes are in P$ form, with $2,500 paid out every day!
Meanwhile, fastforward Leaderboards (P$1,000 daily), Daily SNG Leaderboards (P$10,500 every week) and Daily SPINS Leaderboards (P$12,000 daily) all pay out in partydollars.
Although partydollars expire, you have 12 months to use them and turn them into cash. Remember that you cannot withdraw, sell or transfer partydollars, so make the most of them!
At PokerListings we like to help players maximise their options, so we’ve made a selection of the latest online poker bonuses and offers in our special info section.
Good luck at the tables, and have fun!
It’s been a sad week for the poker world, with the news that Doyle Brunson, universally known as the Godfather of Poker, passed away on 14 May.
The two-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) champion had a glittering career that spanned decades. Even on the day – 11 June, 2018 – that he announced his retirement from tournament poker at that year’s WSOP, he bowed out in style, making the final table of the $10,000 buy-in, 2–7 Single Draw event, finishing in sixth place for $43,963.
The Original Poker Success Story
For most, $40K would be a significant sum, but this barely made a difference to Brunson’s lifetime tournament earnings, which topped $6 million. Remarkably, despite this, too, being a substantial achievement, the legend – nicknamed Texas Dolly – was recently reputed to be worth $75 million.
A Winning Mix of ‘Old Style’ Poker and Keeping Up With the Times
Given Brunson’s practical, easy demeanour despite the considerable stakes he played for, perhaps it’s no surprise that he managed to carve out such a successful career both on and off the poker table. Ranked by Bluff magazine as the game’s most influential player, his legacy is unparalleled.
Happy to share his wisdom and the skills that saw him win back-to-back WSOP Main Event titles in 1976 and 1977, the books he wrote proved to be an invaluable help to countless poker fans over generations. “Doyle Brunson’s Super System” became the ultimate bible, prompting Super System 2 and going through numerous (re)editions to the point that it was – and remains – an essential read for any self-respecting poker player with even an ounce of ambition. The tome even appeared in the opening scenes of the classic 1998 poker movie Rounders, starring Matt Damon and fellow poker fan, Edward Norton.
Significantly, Brunson demonstrated a willingness to adapt over the years, his approach moving the with the times as the game evolved – catch him playing with a host of young(er) top pros in his many TV appearances to see how he continued to be a force to be reckoned with throughout his illustrious career.
Brunson the Mind-Reader
For your writer, my favourite aspect of Brunson’s game was his focus on psychology. We’ll end with the Master’s own words on the subject – advice that everyone, from beginner to number-cruncher, would do well to take in: “More than any other game, poker depends on your understanding your opponent… you’ve got to know what makes him tick at the moment you’re involved in a pot with him. What’s his mood … his feeling? What’s his apparent psychological frame of mind right now?”
After COVID effectively confined us to our homes for so long, it’s great to see the poker world thrive once again, with the return of a host of live poker tournaments to add to the delights of real money online poker – for the poker eco-system to prosper, the two need to be working in tandem.
The mighty PokerStars has a successful track record of giving online poker tournament players opportunities to turn their online skills to a live poker experience at big money, prestigious festivals, and the full schedule of their latest venture is now available.
The PokerStars UK and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) is sure to be one of the year’s most popular poker series, having kicked off so well with the Irish Poker Open 2023 which, impressively, was a record-breaking edition.
PokerStars are also adding some extra spice by bringing back a UKIPT Leaderboard (see below) that will crown the Player of the Year.
UKIPT 2023 tour stops include:
(The Irish Open, Royal Dublin Society: 3-10 April)
UKIPT Blackpool, Grosvenor Casino: 11-16 July
UKIPT Brighton, Rendezvous Casino: 5-10 September
UKIPT London, Hippodrome & The Dilly: 19-24 September
UKIPT Edinburgh, Genting Fountain Park: 24-29 October
UKIPT Nottingham Grand Final, Dusk Till Dawn: 4-14 November
Note that the UKIPT Grand Final includes a stop in Nottingham, with a £1,000,000 guarantee, while the London leg of the tour includes the popular Women’s event.
Qualify Online
UK stops will have a £1,100 buy-in for the Main Event, while there’s also a £2,200 buy-in High Roller fixture at each edition. As usual at PokerStars, you can win your way to these exciting UKIPT events at bargain prices via ongoing bankroll-friendly online satellites across .COM/.EU, .FR and .ES platforms. There are two types of prizes are up for grabs, namely Seat Only (valued at £1,100) and Seat + £400 expense package (valued at £1,500).
UKIPT 2023 Leaderboard
The dedicated UKIPT Leaderboard, which includes all stops plus the Summer Festival Malta, works on a points-based system that awards points to every player who cashes in an eligible event, these being all standard Multi-Table Tournaments with a buy in over £220/€220 (excluding satellites). Points are based on finishing position and number of event entries.
The top three Leaderboard finishers will receive the following prizes:
1st Prize: £15,000 UKIPT 2024 Package (£11,000 in 2024 live event credits plus £4,000 cash expenses)
2nd Prize: £2,200 in 2024 live event credits
3rd Prize: £1,100 in 2024 live event credits
Cedric Billot, Associate Director for Live Events, had this to say about the leading online poker operator’s popular tour: “We are delighted to bring back the full schedule of the UKIPT, including five stops across the UK, as well as the Irish Poker Open which was a huge success earlier this year. I am also very pleased to announce that our UKIPT Tournament leaderboard has been introduced and will include the Summer Festival Malta”…
Juicy Stakes Poker once again taps into the future, with yet more focus on providing an overall online poker experience that’s forward-thinking while at the same time catering to the engine room of real money online poker – namely those players who populate the lower stakes games.
Every poker player whose experience in the game goes back years will bemoan how the online poker landscape has grown increasingly difficult to navigate. Those who struggle when once they prospered will tell anyone unfortunate enough to be within earshot that it’s just not the same as it used to be in the good old days when exploiting weak(er) players’ mistakes and lack of poker sophistication was like shooting fish in a barrel. These days, the ‘fish situation’ is noticeably different – so many fish have themselves become sharks, and the rest seem to have grown teeth sufficiently sharp to do damage.
Juicy Micro-Stakes Games…
One result of the global online poker mini boom brought on in most part by COVID effectively forcing people to spend more time at home is an increase in the popularity of micro-stakes games. Interestingly, the new influx of poker fans and the fact that recreational players have more downtime are not the only factors that have contributed to there being more micro-stakes tables. In fact, more experienced players are also – prudently, we could argue – dropping down a level or two (or more!). Some of those from the first two groups mentioned above might consider this bad news, but as well as using lower-stakes games to grow your bankroll, coming across more troublesome opposition is also a good way to improve your game.
Juicy Stakes Poker is an excellent choice for all kinds of players who appreciate the usefulness of hitting the lower stakes tables. Stakes start at $0.10/$0.25, which is a good level – as opposed to something like $0.02/$0.04, for example, which is essentially ‘play money’ with a few cents in.
There tends to be plenty of action day and night, with No-Limit Hold’em and various forms of Omaha available.
To conclude, the advantages of playing micro-stakes games at Juicy Stakes Poker are numerous and apply across the spectrum of players from beginners to serious grinders. Moreover, given that micro-stakes poker also lends itself well to multi-tabling, you can better take advantage of promotions such as the Frequent Player Points (FPPs) as you go!

After the record first-running in Jan 2022, the World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOP-C) has returned to Calgary three more times, with the most recent edition generating almost $3.5 million in prizes from almost 6,900 entries.
It’s now official – Calgary is a spot to remember on the annual WSOP Circuit. With its fourth edition now in the books, the host venue of Deerfoot Inn & Casino has shown it belongs in the same league as the biggest stops on the Circuit.
With almost 6,900 entries across the 13-event series this time around, Calgary has quickly emerged as one of the biggest international stops on the Circuit, and it rivals some of the biggest US stops as well. Calgary has two dates every year on the colander, one in January and the other in May.
The most recent series ran from May 3 – May 15 and was the fourth Calgary edition of the local version of the WSOP tour. There were 13 events across the two-week series and 13 different players walked away with Gold Rings, all of whom were winning rings for the first time.
Winners this time around ranged from amateurs to professional poker players, with one newly minted Ring winner almost at the event by accident. The series also continued the trend of Main Event prize money staying local – for the fourth time on the trot, an Alberta player took the win in the Main Event.
Almost $3.5 Million in Prizes
By the time the dust settled on the two weeks of poker, there was just shy of $3.5 million ($CDN) in total prizes. The only prize pool that cracked $1 million during the series was the $1,700 Main Event, which finished with almost 950 entries for a total prize pool of $1,433,792.
Once again, it was a local player who pocketed the biggest share of that deep pool. Krystian Hady from Lethbridge, one of Alberta’s smaller cities about two hours south of Calgary, pocketed more than $241k after Monday’s Day 3 when he took down local legend Matt Kwong in a heads-up battle where Hady had to come back from a big deficit to win.
Hady’s win marked the fourth-timer running that an Alberta player took down the Main Event here in Calgary. While there has yet to be a winner from either of the province’s biggest cities, previous winners were Cody McKay from Daysland, AB, Rob Limpert from Grande Prairie, AB, and John French from Canmore, AB.
Two Weeks of Stories
Darcy Alemany, Winner of the Mystery Bounty
One of the early series winners didn’t even know the series was running, but he still walked away with his first Circuit ring. Darcy Alemany wasn’t in Calgary for the WSOP-C – he was in town the week previous as a vendor at Calgary Expo, the annual science fiction and comic convention in Calgary.
While at the convention, he saw ads for the Circuit series coming up the following week and, given that he’d had a good convention, made the decision to extend his stay in Cowtown and compete for a Ring.
Pavlo Vertiiko, Winner of the High Roller
Decisions are what make or break a poker player, and this was clearly just the first of many good decisions for Alemany as he took down the Mystery Bounty event for his first Ring and a handful of bounty vouchers. In the end, he booked a win of better than $30k thanks to a spur-of-the-minute decision to stay in Calgary after a work trip.
Other stories from the week included two players new to Canada battling it out for the win in the closing High Roller Event. Pavlo Vertiiko eventually took it down over Qingwie Justin Meng, but neither player had been in Canada more than a year when they got the heads up. Vertiiko arrived in Canada last fall via Ukraine and Europe, while Meng has only been here since last summer, arriving from China via the US.
Both players were clearly experienced at poker, if not as Canadians. Vertiiko has a couple of final tables from Ukraine in 2019, as well as a second place from the 2022 EPT Monte Carlo, stop on his resume, so he’s clearly played the game before. Meng has a couple of wins on his live poker resume, including a recent win in another classic Canadian poker series, the Station Classic at Casino Regina.
Glen Craigen, Winner of the Big 30 Stack
Vertiiko’s win came after he entered the High Roller late. It wasn’t his fault though, as he was busy cashing in Day 2 of the Main Event when the HR started, but he jumped in as soon as he pocketed his ME cash. There were a couple of other similar players in previous events with Friday being a big day for a few players.
The feature game on Friday was the Go phase of the first-in-market Flip & Go game, with a PLO Bounty game running as the late side event. Two players, Justin Hotte-McKinnon and James (Zeyu) Du were both at their second final tables of the day after final-tabling the Go stage and jumping into the PLO late. Travis MacKinnon was on his second final table of the series, with Mazen Naous on his fourth in that late four-card game.
One other player had a pretty solid series – Glen “Frosty_Nug_Farm” Craigen, who has had a pretty decent 2023 so far. He started the year off by spinning $10 into a Platinum Pass and more than $40k at the PSPC this past January, and now he’s followed that up with his first circuit Ring – one of four cashes for him this series.

Calgary is Big for WSOP-C
2022 was the first year the WSOP-C came to Cowtown, and the first edition proved to be the biggest poker series ever run in the fast-growing live poker market of Alberta, Canada. After the first event, it was obvious to everyone involved that Calgary would be a great stop for the Circuit, and the stop is among the biggest on the international tour and has grown to rival some of the biggest US stops as well.
January 2023 saw more than 1,500 entries and almost $2.2 million in prizes for the Main Event, smashing the previous record set by the event in 2022. While the May edition of the series tends to be a bit smaller than January, between the four Main Events run in the southern Alberta city so far there has been almost $6.75 million in prizes handed out.
Both years so far have seen increases from the previous year, with this May’s Main Event about 5% bigger than last May and Jan-to-Jan about 22% bigger. Look for WSOP-C Calgary 2024 next January where players could easily be playing for more than $2.5 million in the ever-growing WSOP-C Calgary.
There is $2 million guaranteed in the XL Spring Series at 888poker in late May and early June including a $500k guaranteed Main Event Mystery.
Spring is in the air and at 888poker that means big guarantees blooming in the XL Spring Series. There is $2 million guaranteed across the whole event which runs from May 21 through Jun 6, 2023.
With 32 featured events and a bounty of side events, there are more than 100 games for players to choose from in the XL Spring Series on 888poker. There are two multi-flight games running during the series with $700k guaranteed between them, and Day 1 flights for the first of them, $200,000 XL Spring #19 – Mystery Bounty 8-Max, start on May 24 with Day 2 on May 29.
The Main Event Mystery is the second multi-flight game of the series, and players can begin qualifying for that one on May 31. There is more than $600k in other guarantees across the rest of the featured events, plus nearly $700k more in side event guarantees, so there is plenty to play for on 888poker this spring.
Mystery Bounties Lead the Way
The latest format that has the poker world talking is the Mystery Bounty format, and the XL Spring Series is chock-full of them. Both multi-flight events are in the Mystery format and they will both have some truly eye-watering big bounties to be won.
The thickest envelope in the Main Event game will be $50k, so the winner will likely need more than just regular pockets to hold that one. In Event #19, the biggest prize to be won will be $20k.
The multi-flight events aren’t the only place players can find some mystery though – there are also mystery bounty games in both the one-day featured events as well as heavily sprinkled through the side events. The first event of the series, the Mystery Bounty Opening, is the third biggest prize pool of the whole series with $120k guaranteed and a $12k big bounty.

More Than Mystery
For online poker players who want a break from the Mystery Machine, there is plenty of other poker action on the go for this XL Spring Series. While there are quite a few games in the Mystery format, there are also progressive knockout games, super knockout, and even some old-school games where all the money goes into prizes and there are no bounties at all.
Games in the Spring Series range from $5.50 up to $525 so there are games for most bankrolls, but as always, there are also a lot of satellites to help players get in for cheaper. Players looking for the cheapest route to the Main Event can start from nothing – the XL Spring Main Event Freeroll has 13 seats guaranteed to a $25 qualifier that awards 3 seats to the Main Event.
There are a variety of other low-cost satellite options specifically tailored to the XL Spring series in the lobby starting from $2.20, but 888poker also has a healthy regular schedule of satellite games that feed into tickets for many of the smaller and side events as well. To find all the satellites on 888poker, select “Satellites” from the Category filter, and make sure “Show Satellites” is also selected on the bottom bar.

One such that came from Americas Cardroom recently was of nosebleed levels! Given that, generally, packages worth a few thousand are well worth winning, it’s no surprise that a prize worth $100,000 attracted a lot of attention.
If you didn’t bother getting involved (perhaps because you think ‘it’s always someone else who wins these fantastic prizes’), then you missed out on a great chance…
It Could Have Been You…
Had you won one of these amazing prize packages, you would have been sent to Vietnam in March to take part in the Triton Super High Roller Series. This is the ultimate example of real money online poker providing chances to translate playing in online poker tournaments to a live poker tournament experience. In this case, the package included $100,000 for tournament buy-ins in the series, accommodation at a luxury hotel, airfare and – as is fitting at such a prestigious event – full VIP treatment.
ACR Team Pros Monika Zukowicz, Jeff Boski and Jon “apestyles” Van Fleet – who all earned a package through a poker competition on ACR – took part, while ACR Stormer Mark “Weazel” Rubbathan also earned his spot through a separate competition.
Vietnam, of course, is a popular holiday destination famous for exotic scenery and rich culture, so it’s a dream venue for an international poker festival. By now you should be inspired to in future go for glory when presented with this kind of promotion, not least because poker is unique in making big time events accessible to everyday players.
To see what kind of experience you could have thanks to this ambitious online poker operator, you can watch a special video catalogue of the players’ adventures via the Americas Cardroom YouTube channel.
Note that the High Stakes Adventure: Vietnam is not a unique promo for ACR! More players qualified for this month’s Mediterranean life-changing experience in the form of the High Stakes Adventure: Cyprus which, again, was a no-brainer for any poker fan with even a hint of ambition.
Keep your eyes peeled for more enormous packages to be won at ACR… Good luck at the tables, and have fun!

The event’s consistent growth and unwavering popularity continue to showcase the allure and excitement of competitive poker, making it a highlight of The Festival Series in Malta.
Starting Flights
After a sloppy start on Day 1A, the following starting flights catapulted the total entries up to 354 in the end. It was eventually the reigning champion of the PokerListings Championship Nottingham Colin Lovelock, who topped the remaining 53 players after all the starting flights. During all the starting flights here during The Festival Series at Portomaso Casino in St. Julians in Malta, the atmosphere was ecstatic, and it emerged to be a perfect start to the series in the end. Despite the number of entrants being higher in Nottingham with 383, the prize pool wasn’t on the other hand as the buy-in was much less with £120.
The Festival Series at Portomaso Casino in St. Julians, Malta kicked off with a slightly rocky start on Day 1A, but the subsequent starting flights more than made up for it, resulting in a total of 354 entries by the end. Among the remaining 53 players, it was none other than the reigning champion of the PokerListings Championship Nottingham, Colin Lovelock, who emerged at the top.
Throughout all the starting flights, the atmosphere at the Portomaso Casino was electric, with players and spectators alike caught up in the excitement. The series got off to a perfect start, setting the stage for an incredible tournament.
Comparatively, although the number of entrants in Nottingham reached a higher figure of 383, the prize pool didn’t match up due to the lower buy-in of £120. Nevertheless, the sheer intensity and competitiveness of the tournament remained unchanged.
The PokerListings Championship Nottingham was a testament to Lovelock’s exceptional skills, as he managed to secure his position among the top players despite the fierce competition. His victory was well-deserved, solidifying his status as a formidable force during The Festival Series.
As The Festival Series at Portomaso Casino continued, anticipation grew for what was to come. The initial hiccups of Day 1A were long forgotten, replaced by the thrill of the game and the hope of winning big. Players eagerly awaited the next rounds, eager to witness the emergence of new champions and the incredible displays of skill and strategy that this event is known for.
Overall, the Festival Series at Portomaso Casino provided a fantastic start to the series, with a lively atmosphere and fierce competition. The stage was set for an unforgettable tournament, as players from all over showcased their talent and fought for their chance at glory.

Malta is a truly destined poker destination due to its location in the Mediterranean Sea, the amount of sunshine, with many activities to enjoy, and the good food server all over the island. With multiple casinos on the island, it is great for poker overall, as players can jump from one tournament to the other. With huge events like The Festival Series here, the Maltese mixed games players such as Antoine Degiorgio and Martin Smith, are super happy with it all. The first mentioned name, Antoine Degiorgio, managed to get through to the second day of the PokerListings event, trying to hunt down a trophy which he adores so much.
Other notable names such as the Italians Benedetto Caruso and Michele Amirante, Estonians pride Marius Morel, Swedish superstars Bjorne Lindberg and Noelia Ivars, and Austrian Manual Blasche who won the event last year in Bratislava during the same Festival Series. Another notable name, Younes Jarir, who went through to the second day was sitting at the final table in Bratislava as well but then busted out as 9th.

Day 2
The final day of the event kicked off with 53 remaining players, all looking to hunt down the victory and to be crowned prestigious winner of this event. Not only awarded with €16,200 in prize money, but also having eternal bragging rights, fame, and an iconic trophy, provided by The Festival Series. At 16:00 it was time to get going, and it wouldn’t take that long before we had reached the final table:
Fun facts:
Manuel Blaschke from Austria won the PokerListings Championship Bratislava in Oktober 2022.
Colin Lovelock from the UK won the PokerListings Championship Nottingham in February 2023.
Younes Jarir became 9th during PokerListings Championship Bratislava in Oktober 2022.
Younes Jarir crowned as champion!
The final table was over before we even knew it. One after the other busted and soon later they were left with just 3 players. Blaschke was in the lead at that point, until he lost a massive all-in against Jarir when he had [Ax][10x] against the [Qx][Qx] of Jarir. From that moment onwards it was one-way traffic towards the Dutchman, and suddenly Jarir was sitting in the winner seat, while our photographer took shots for the winners portrait.
It was an amazing event eventually, with 354 entrants going into the books as a very successful event. In the end, the PokerListings Championship was once again something not to be forgotten, and topping the side events of The Festival Series here in Malta.
Congratulations to Younes Jarir from The Netherlands with the victory, and we will see you all during our next event!
