Toke

In craps, a Toke is a tip a player gives to the dealers using casino chips. It can be handed straight to the crew or placed as a small bet in their favor, and serves as a way to thank them for running the game and helping players. This happens directly at the table during regular craps action.

At a live craps table, a Toke is separate from regular wagers and is set aside for the staff. Tips are tracked separately, so dealer tips don’t get mixed into player payouts.

  • Direct Tokes: Hand one or more chips to a dealer and say “for the dealers” or “for the crew.” The dealer drops the chips into the locked tip box, and the crew shares these Tokes after the shift.
  • Dealer bet Tokes: Place a small wager and also say that it is “for the dealers”. Many players choose simple bets such as the Pass Line, odds, or a place bet on 6 or 8\. If that bet wins, the profit belongs to the dealers; if it loses, the Toke is gone.

Tokes in different types of craps

Tokes can vary depending on where the game is played:

  • Land-based casinos: Players tip with chips or dealer bets at a physical table, during good rolls or when they leave the table ahead. Dealer bets might be called out with phrases like “hard eight for the boys” or “two-way yo,” where part of the wager is for the crew.
  • Live dealer online tables: The game uses real dealers and dice streamed from a studio, and the platform may include a small on-screen tipping button. This is not a standard feature across all live craps games, but in some titles, it lets players send a direct gratuity to the dealer that is separate from their regular wagers.
  • RNG online craps: The game uses virtual dice and automated game logic, with no human dealer at the table. There is no one to tip, so these games do not have a real Toke option.

Why players give Tokes

Tokes are part of craps etiquette and help support the people who keep the game moving. Dealers rely on tips to supplement their base pay, and a small Toke is a simple way to show appreciation.

Tokes are always optional. Every player decides when and how much to tip, based on their bankroll and how they feel about the service.

FAQs

How much should I Toke at a craps table?

There is no set percentage for Tokes. Many players keep their tips small and steady, such as a few dollars per hour, while others treat Tokes as a small share of their winnings and tip around 1–2%. The important point is to tip only what fits comfortably within your bankroll.

Is it better to hand a Toke to the dealers or bet it for them?

Handing over chips guarantees that the crew receives the full tip. Betting a Toke can be more fun, because a winning wager increases the size of the tip, but that Toke disappears if the bet loses.
