Understanding Standoff in Blackjack

In blackjack, you win by finishing closer to 21 than the dealer without going over 21. Most hands end with a clear winner. Sometimes, though, your final total matches the dealer’s final total. That tied result is called a standoff. It is a common outcome, and it simply means the hand is over with no winner.

What a “Standoff” Means

A blackjack standoff happens when the player and dealer have the same total after all cards are played. Many casinos use the word push for the same thing. Examples are 18 vs 18, 20 vs 20, or 21 vs 21. The exact cards do not matter, only the total. So a 10 and 8 ties with a 9, 6, and 3 because both totals equal 18.

What Happens to Your Bet

After a standoff, the usual result is that your main bet is returned to you. In beginner terms, nothing is won, and nothing is lost:

The dealer clears the cards and starts the next round.
