Signals

In blackjack, a signal is a hand gesture used instead of words to show the dealer how you want to play your cards. With a simple movement, you indicate whether you want another card, want to stop, or ask for a split.

Casinos rely on signals because cameras can record them clearly. If your words and your gesture give different messages, the dealer will follow the gesture as your real choice.

Common Blackjack Signals at the Table

Blackjack signals cover all the main actions available to players and work as follows:

  • Asking for another card (Hit).
  • With face-up cards: tap the table in front of your bet.
  • With face-down cards: lightly scratch the edge of your cards on the felt toward yourself.
  • Indicating that you need no more cards (Stand).
  • With face-up cards: wave your hand palm down over your cards as if saying stop.
  • With face-down cards: slide your cards under the front edge of your chips.
  • Indicating that you want to double your original bet and take exactly one more card (Double down).
  • Place a second stack of chips next to your first bet and point at it with one finger.
  • Asking to split a pair into two separate hands (Split).
  • Add a second bet equal to your first and point at the two cards with two fingers spread apart.
  • Indicating your desire to give up the hand and forfeit half your bet (Surrender):
  • Draw a short horizontal line behind your chips with your index finger.

Signals in Online, Live, and Land-Based Blackjack

Non-verbal signals serve the same purpose in every blackjack format, but the way you give them depends on how you are playing the game. Here is what you can expect from every blackjack format:

  1. In a land-based casino, hand signals are mandatory because noise on the floor can hide spoken instructions. Dealers are trained to pay attention to the gestures, as it makes it easy to verify every decision via camera.
  2. In live dealer online blackjack, you still face a human dealer on video, yet you click on screen buttons such as Hit, Stand, Double, Split, or Surrender. Those buttons replace hand signals, but they represent the same choices.
  3. In fully digital blackjack, software deals the cards instead of a human dealer. Your decisions can be made only via buttons.

FAQs

Are blackjack signals the same in every casino?

Core ideas are shared, but small details can change. Asking the dealer to explain local signals before the first hand is a simple way to avoid confusion.

Can I use secret signals with friends at the blackjack table?

Secret signals that share information about cards, suggest decisions to another player, or help a group act as a team are treated as a form of collusion. A casino may void a hand, ask players to leave the table, or even bar them from the venue if it believes signals are being used to gain an unfair advantage.

If I use the wrong hand signal by mistake, can I get in trouble?

Standard signals for hit, stand, double, split, or surrender will not get you removed if you get one wrong by accident and are clearly acting in good faith. For example, if you gesture for a split when you can’t get one, the dealer will just ask you to repeat or clarify your gesture so your decision is clear.
