Over/Under in blackjack is an optional extra bet you can make before any cards are dealt. It is not part of the main game and does not affect how your hand is played. This wager is also often called Over/Under 13\. The main idea is to guess whether the total value of your first two cards will be higher than 13 or lower than 13\.

How Over/Under Works

Before the cards are dealt, you choose Over or Under. Once you receive your first two cards, the bet is decided immediately.

If your two cards add up to less than 13 and you chose Under, you win. If they add up to more than 13 and you chose Over, you win. If the total is exactly 13, you lose automatically, no matter what you chose.

After that, the blackjack hand continues as normal. You can still choose to take more cards or stop, just like in a regular game.

Example of the Over/Under Bet

If you bet on Under and your cards are a 5 and a 6, the total is 11 and you win. If you bet on Over and your cards are a 9 and a 7, the total is 16 and you also win. If your cards add up to 13, such as an 8 and a 5, the bet loses right away.

Odds and House Edge

The Over/Under bet may seem close to a 50/50 choice, but the odds are not even. There are many card combinations that add up to exactly 13, and those hands always lose.

Because of this, the house edge is usually between 6% and 10%, which is much higher than regular blackjack. The standard game played with basic strategy has a house edge of under 1%, making the Over/Under bet a much riskier option.
