What “Off” Means in Craps: When Bets Pause on the Come-Out Roll

In Craps, some bets can be working or paused. The term “Off” means the bet is not active for the next roll. If the dice land on a result that would normally make that bet win or lose, nothing happens. Your chips stay put, waiting for a roll when the bet is “On” again. You will hear “Off” a lot on the come-out roll, which is the first roll of a new round.

Why “Off” Matters

Off is a safety setting. The come-out roll is mainly about setting a point number, so many tables treat some bets as Off by default. This helps players avoid losing those bets if a 7 is rolled on the come-out roll before a point is established. Dealers may also say “working” to mean the opposite of Off.

Common Bets That Are Off on the Come Out

When the puck shows “OFF,” these are the usual rules to remember:

Place and Buy bets are Off unless you call them working.
Odds behind established Come bets are Off on the come-out roll unless you turn them On.

Example: Protecting a Place Bet

You have a Place bet on the 6 from the previous round. The shooter makes the point, so the round ends and a new come-out roll begins. If your 6 is Off, then a 7 on the come-out roll will not wipe out that Place bet. The chip stays on the 6 and will start working again after a new point is set. If you say “six working,” the bet is On right away. Now you can win if a 6 rolls, but you can also lose if a 7 rolls on that same come-out roll.

Online vs. Land-Based Controls

In a land-based casino, you change a bet’s status by telling the dealer before the roll, like “my Place bets are Off” or “come odds Off.” The dealer may repeat it back and mark it. In online Craps, you usually tap a button or toggle next to the bet that says working or Off. The rule is the same, but the control is on screen, so double-check the setting before the roll.
