A marker puck is a small but important tool used in the casino game of craps. It helps everyone at the table quickly understand the current state of the game. While the marker puck is not a bet and has no cash value, it plays a key role in keeping the game clear and organized, especially for new players.

What Is a Marker Puck?

The marker puck is a round disc used by the dealer to show whether a point has been set and, if so, which number is the point. It acts as a visual signal that tells players whether the game is in the come-out phase or in the point phase. Most marker pucks are simple and easy to recognize. They are designed to be seen clearly from anywhere around the table.

Design and Sides of the Marker Puck

The marker puck has two sides:

One side says OFF and is often dark in color
The other side says ON and is often light in color

These words are not decorative. They clearly show the current status of the round. When the puck shows OFF, no point is active. When the puck shows ON, a point has been established.

When the Marker Puck Is OFF

At the start of a new round, the marker puck is placed on the side of the table with the OFF side facing up. This means the next roll is a come-out roll. During this stage, certain bets are allowed or work differently. For example, Pass Line and Don’t Pass Line bets are made or resolved on the come-out roll. Seeing the puck in the OFF position tells players that the table is starting fresh.

When the Marker Puck Is ON

If the shooter rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 on the come-out roll, that number becomes the point. The dealer then places the marker puck directly on that number on the table and flips it to the ON side. Once the puck is ON, the goal is simple:

If the point number is rolled again, Pass Line bets win
If a 7 is rolled before the point, Pass Line bets lose

The marker puck stays on the point number until one of these outcomes happens.

While the marker puck doesn’t affect the dice or change the odds, it is essential for smooth gameplay.
