Craps Field Bet: One-Roll Wager, Winning Numbers, and Payouts

If you are new to craps, the Field Bet is one of the easiest bets to understand. It is quick, simple, and it settles after just one roll of the dice. You place it, the shooter rolls, and you find out right away if you won or lost. Because it is a fast bet, it can be exciting, but it can also disappear quickly if the wrong number shows up.

What a Field Bet Is

A Field Bet is a wager that the next roll will land on one of several specific totals. You place your chips in the box labeled “Field” on the table layout (or tap the Field option in an online game). After the next roll, the bet is resolved and removed, whether it wins or loses. If you want to keep betting the Field, you must place it again for the next roll.

Winning Numbers and Common Payouts

Here is what usually wins and loses on a Field Bet, plus the payouts you will see most often:

2 usually pays 2 to 1 (some casinos pay 3 to 1);
3 pays 1 to 1;
4 pays 1 to 1;
9 pays 1 to 1;

10 pays 1 to 1;
11 pays 1 to 1;
12 usually pays 2 to 1 (some casinos pay 3 to 1);
5, 6, 7, 8 are losing Field numbers.

The key idea is simple: you win on 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12 and lose on 5, 6, 7, 8.

Online vs. Land-Based Casino Play

The Field Bet means the same thing online and in a land-based casino: it is a one roll bet on the Field numbers. The main differences are practical. In a casino, payout rules can vary by table, so you should look for a sign on the layout or ask the dealer whether 2 and 12 pay double or triple. Online, the rules are usually shown in a help menu, and the game automatically pays you correctly, which makes it easier to avoid confusion.

Example: A Quick Field Bet Moment

Imagine you are standing at a craps table and the shooter is about to roll. You place a $10 chip on the Field. The dice tumble and land on 10. Since 10 is a Field number, you win 1 to 1, so the dealer pays you $10 profit and returns your $10 chip (you now have $20 from that wager). On the next roll, you do nothing. Even if another Field number appears, you are not in the bet anymore because the Field Bet only lasts for one roll.
