How It Works

Casinos use comps to thank players and to keep them coming back. The more a player wagers and the longer they play, the more value they create for the casino and the more comps they can receive.

Most casinos track play through a player’s club card, which usually works as follows:

• The player signs up for a loyalty card.
• They insert the card into a slot machine or hand it to the dealer at table games.
• The casino records average bet size, game type, and time played.
• Based on that record, the casino assigns comp points or offers specific freebies.

Behind the scenes, many casinos estimate a player’s “theoretical loss” using the house edge of the game and the total amount wagered, then give back a small part of that amount as comps. High-stakes players may also get extra, discretionary comps from a casino host.

Example in a Casino

A player spends an evening making $1 slot spins with their card in the machine. The next day, they visit the rewards desk and learn that they have enough points for a free buffet and some free slot play. Those perks are comps.

At a blackjack table, a player bets steadily for several hours with their card rated at the table. The pit boss notices the long session and calls a host, who offers the player a free or discounted room for the night. That room is a comp based on the value of their play, not on whether they won or lost.

Why It Matters

Comps matter because they reduce the real cost of gambling. A player is still risking money on games with a house edge, but comps give back part of that cost in meals, rooms, or other benefits.

Comps also help players compare casinos. One property might have fewer slots but generous comps, while another might have better game rules but smaller rewards. Understanding comps helps a player judge which casino fits their habits, preferences, and budget.
