Try Something Different With the Exciting Tempest Hold’Em Cash Game at PokerStars

Online poker fans have never had it so good, with more games, variants and other items on the poker menu than you can shake a stick at. By both staying ahead of the real money poker curve and striving to contribute their own flavour to the global community, online poker operators succeed in keeping the machine ticking over nicely, and to the benefit of the players (which, after all, is the collective goal).

An exciting offering at PokerStars is Tempest Hold’em, an interesting version of the standard Texas Hold'em cash game that has an intriguing twist.

Tempest Hold’Em: How It Works

This unique format differs from the regular game in a significant way, thanks to the following features:

  • Antes are used which increase until there’s a showdown
  • There’s an additional pre-flop blind
  • Players have two options: all-in or fold

Not surprisingly, these innovative tweaks make for a quick and action-packed game, and the rules couldn’t be easier. Every player posts an ante, the value of which is determined by the previous hand - if there was a showdown, the ante is reset to its lowest value at those stakes, otherwise the ante value keeps increasing (up to a maximum value).

Meanwhile, the player to the left of the Big Blind posts a third blind called the Giant Blind, which is twice the value of the Big Blind. The game is then played out according to Texas Hold’em rules, but with pre-flop options being either all-in or fold, and every pot ‘capped’ so that no player can wager (or lose) more than 10 Giant Blinds in a single hand.
