Welcome to Day 1c of the €500K GTD MPF Grand Event

Welcome back to the PokerListings’ coverage of the 2022 Malta Poker Festival (MPF) Autumn Edition €550 Grand Event Powered by partypoker with Day 1c set to kick off at 2 p.m. CEST.

The €500,000 guarantee on the Grand Event is likely just a placeholder based on the first two opening flights attracting 461 entries. Many of these players already advanced to Day 2 with 47 entries bagging chips on Day 1a and 67 players doing the same on Day 1b.

The Grand Event features five opening flights from Oct. 26-29. Those surviving from any open flights will compete for two more days on Oct. 30-31 until a winner is eventually crowned on Halloween. The first four opening flights, including today’s Day 1c, boast 13 blind levels of 40-minutes each giving players plenty of time to build a massive stack. Players start with a monstrous stack of 50,000 in chips for 500 big blinds during the first blind level. The final opening flight will be a turbo-charged affair boasting 20-minute blind levels with an ending time to be determined based on the average stack sizes of the other opening flights.

The MPF is all about the players as can be evidenced in the fact that this event doesn’t feature unlimited re-entries and late registration closing at a reasonable time after Level 8 of each day. That being said, if players have some bad luck early on and don’t want to wait for another opening flight to get back into the Grand Event, they can re-enter twice each day before late registration closes.

Those finding a bag during any of the opening flights will enjoy an even deeper structure with 50-minute blinds on Day 2 and even longer 60-minute blind levels on the final day.

Players can also join a contest hosted by PokerDeals where they can win back their €550 buy-in along with plenty of other goodies. There will be flyers with instructions at each table about how to participate.

Greece’s Anastasios Apostolou currently has the chip lead after finishing Day 1b with 539,000. Just behind Apostolou is Daniel Taylor with 519,000 in chips.

Something for Everyone

The MPF Grand Event is the cornerstone of the festival. However, there are plenty of side events, satellites, and around-the-clock cash games in different formats and stakes to provide something for every poker player.

Today is another special day for side events as many players plan to hop into the two-day The Hendon Mob €225 Championship starting at 4 p.m. The Hendon Mob's team is here in full force including the infamous WSOP Twitter Czar Kevin "Kevmath" Mathers who arrived yesterday from the United States. Meanwhile, The Hendon Mob's Roland Boothby will have the full two days to play if he can make it past the opening day as he found a healthy bag of 157,000 in chips during yesterday's Day 1b of the Grand Event.

Also taking place today will be the final €60 live satellite at 6 p.m. These have been drawing huge numbers and many players haven't been playing by a Dara O'Kearney-approved strategy. This author witnessed during Monday's satellite that players that seemingly had the Main Event seat locked up were still playing hands. Without giving away too much satellite strategy, please don't do this if you plan to play the satellite tonight.

Finally, the MPF €150 Deepstack Fulltilt Catania kicks off at 8 p.m. for those looking for a late-night tournament experience while playing for big money.
