888poker's Tom Yates Turns 1 Cent Satellite into $19,500 WSOP Cash

Tommy Yates is originally from England but has lived the last two decades in Greece where he owns a small bar. This year Yates won his way to the World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas for just a 1 cent investment on 888poker and now he's cashed for $19,500 USD. Yates says he plays a lot of poker online but that he usually pulls his money off the site when summer hits. His wife convinced him to redeposit $20 and try to win a WSOP package. Yates started at the very bottom, putting up 1/100th of a dollar, and smashed his way through all the step-qualifiers to win a $13,000 trip to the WSOP. Yates brought his wife and son along for the trip and after four days of poker he's got nearly $20k to show for it. I'm originally from Barnsley, in Yorkshire, but I've lived in Greece for the last 22 years on the island of Rhodes. I have a little bar there.
In the summer I don't play poker. I only play in the winter through 888poker on the internet. And I'd taken the money out and my wife said, “Why don't you go for the World Series of Poker.” And I said, “Okay.”
So I put $20 back in and they have a Step 1 for 1 cent and I entered the Step 1 and went to Step 2 and Step 3 and Step 4. I was the chip leader for most of the time and when we got to the last four I was still the chip leader but the bubble was $6,000.
There were three $13,000 packages and I was so tempted to dump the chips and take the $6,000. My son came in at 3am into the bar and I told him I was just about to dump the chips. $6,000 is a lot to me. And he just said, “No, no. How quick will you spend the $6,000. Go for it. It's a once in a lifetime.” So I listened to him and my wife also and I went for it. I ended up winning the tournament and here I am. My first goal was just to make sure I didn't lose the $6,000. My first goal was to make sure I got to the payday. I played as tight as a camel's ass in a sandstorm. I've been folding ace-king, pocket queens. 99 per cent of the guys out there would never have folded what I folded to make sure I got the $15,000.
I'm playing my game of poker now, what got me here. They laughed before but I won't be happy until I'm at that final table.
I cannot explain. Everything's so big over here. It's just fantastic. I've got to do all this again next year. I might spend two pence next year. But I have to do it again and I just love it.
