Tony G wins Asian Poker Tour, donates half of winnings
Tony Guoga's professional experience paid off at the final table of the Betfair Asian Poker Tour in Singapore as he took control of the table and battled his way to a win. He earned $451,700, half of which he promptly donated to charity.
"His offer of a 50% donation to charity is extraordinarily generous," said Ben Fried, head of poker at Betfair Poker.
The donated money will go to Asian and Australian charities to be chosen by Betfair Poker who sponsored the event.
"I want people to know that poker is a sport," Tony Guoga said. "This is not a large amount compared to what people like Bill Gates give to charity, but it is a gesture to show that it's not all about the money. It's about the competition as well."
The money didn't come easy for Guoga either. He had to fend off the chip leader coming into the final table, Swede Samuel Lehtonen, as well as pro Lee Nelson, and local player Ang Pang Leng, also known as Joshua, and others.
Heads-up came down to Guoga against Leng. The final turned out to be Leng's Ace-Jack versus Guoga's Ten-6, but Guoga hit the ten on the flop and Leng's luck didn't show up for the turn or the river either.
Along with the top prize, Guoga was awarded a Merlion trophy as a symbol of Singapore, which Guoga gave to Leng so that it could stay in Singapore. Fried asked Leng to bring the trophy back next year when Betfair Poker returns again for the Asian Poker Tour.
The final table results were as follows:
