GPL Draft Day, American Poker Awards Set for Feb. 25 in L.A.

Los Angeles BOM 3

One of the most exciting developments in poker for 2016 is the launch of the Global Poker League and we'll find out just who will be playing on Feb. 25 in L.A.

The Alex Dreyfus-driven initiative will see 12 teams from 12 cities around the world participating in a brand-new format that's a mash-up of eSports and traditional heads-up poker elements.

Online, in-studio and live events will all be part of the league as will the GPL's own unique playing arena, The Cube.

The first event dates and location are still to be announced but we now know when the players who will make up the teams will be decided.

That date is Feb. 25 when the first-ever GPL Draft will run at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills prior to the 2nd Annual American Poker Awards.

Las Vegas Moneymakers First Team Revealed

As was revealed earlier this week poker boom catalyst Chris Moneymaker will be Team Manager for the Las Vegas Moneymakers.

Chris Moneymaker
Money800 takes the reins.

He'll be solely responsible for drafting his 3-player team (not including himself) from eligible players ranked in the Top 1,000 of the Global Poker Index.

Only players who give consent and opt in will be drafted. The other 11 Team Managers are still to be revealed but they'll represent New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Montreal, Sao Paolo, London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Moscow & Hong Kong.

Teams will be split into two six-team conferences - the Americas and Eurasia. Play is slated to begin in March and run 12 weeks in the lead up to 2016 WSOP.

The League will break for the WSOP and the four top teams, two from each conference, will return for the World Championship post-WSOP.

Two New Awards Added to APAs

Along with the GPL Draft two more Dreyfus initiatives will play out on Feb. 25 in Beverly Hills.

The day will start with the GPL American Poker Conference and end with the GPI American Poker Awards Ceremony & Dinner.

Last year's inaugural event drew a surprisingly big crowd and saw awards handed out to the best players and media contributors in US poker.
