Daily 3-Bet: Epistle of James, Dan + Lance, JC Fights LivB in HD
The PokerListings Daily 3-Bet is a pair of kitchen clogs, an hour at the deep fryer and an infinite level of appreciation for afternoon poker news freedom.
Got a tip for a future 3-Bet? Drop us a note about it in the comments.
Today in the 3-Bet we find James Akenhead learning the value of a pound, Dan Bilzerian virtually fist bumps Lance Armstrong and JC Alvarado mulls some fight streaming options.
1) "You Have to Respect Money"
One of the most common refrains you'll hear among poker's old guard about the young guns of today? They don't know just how good they have it - even if the game is tougher now than it was 10 years ago.
While the ups-and-downs of a career in poker can be trying, of course, they're nothing like the strains of life in the "real" world of jobs, business and relationships. Take it from James Akenhead.
You might remember Akenhead from his appearances at the WSOP Main Event and WSOPE Main Event final tables in 2009 - highlights of a 9-year poker stint that saw him earn over $3.2m in live tournaments.
A professional poker player since he was 21 Akenhead burned out at 30 and decided to try something else in life - specifically, opening his own restaurant/bar.
It didn't quite go as planned. And two years later he's back in poker -- older, wiser and, surprisingly, still beating the game as he found out at WPT Vienna this past week. He learned a few big lessons along the way, too.
Check out his story from Remko Rinkema and the WPT here.
2) T-Minus 48 Hrs till Bilzerian Takeoff
With poker pro Sam Abernathy successfully completing her LV-LA bike ride last weekend, all that's left of the most talked about prop bet in poker at the moment is for Dan Bilzerian to take his turn.
The stakes are much higher ($600k) and he only has 48 hours to finish his ride, but he also had the luxury of bringing in a ringer to help him train for it.
That ringer? Multiple-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. Yeah, that guy.
The two famed "bad boys" seemed to have become fast friends, too, with Armstrong even picking up one of Bilzerian's habits - shooting big guns -along the way. Looking at the highlight video Bilzerian posted, it seems love has bloomed.
Sounds like the ride is set to go this weekend; we'll keep an eye on it and post the results Monday.
3) HD, Commentary or Periscope?
The other big prop bet happening in poker at the moment is the full-on, $150k MMA fight between JC Alvarado and Olivier Busquet.
Based on the pics we've seen/training reports, this is gonna be the real deal and likely a pretty fascinating watch. If you have any interest in doing so, Alvarado is taking votes on the format you'd like best.
Question for those interested in watching my fight vs @olivierbusquet: How many of you would— JC Alvarado (@JCAlvarado1) March 18, 2016
Alvarado is likely the favorite in this one given his more extensive MMA background, but based on Liv's current physique it just might be a toss-up. At the very least, with the impending launch of the Global Poker League, we hope Busquet won't have to sit out any matches with an injury.
Listen to Busquet talk about his training and his mindset heading in to the fight, which will take place April 21, here.
