Daily 3-Bet: $50k Party in NJ, Isildur1 Misplay, Gus = Backgammon King
The PokerListings Daily 3-Bet is the free door-crasher special of the mid-afternoon poker news world and we don't even make you line up the night before.
If you want you can always make a suggestion for a future 3-Bet piece in the comments section below.
Today in the 3-Bet we’ll take a look at Gus Hansen dominating high-stakes backgammon for millions, Party Poker rocking a $50k tournament in New Jersey and one of the all-time greatest Isildur1 videos to ever hit the Internet.
1) Gus Hansen Won $2.5m Playing Backgammon?
While Gus Hansen has been getting crushed playing online poker the last couple years it’s becoming increasingly clear he has other ways of making money.
According to this interview with Jean-Philippe Rohr with fr.PokerListings.com Hansen skipped Day 2 of the EPT Higher Roller in 2010, despite having a big stack, because he was busy winning $2.5 million in his hotel room playing backgammon.
First of all, we had no idea backgammon games could get so big. Second it would be interesting to know if Hansen was playing a backgammon “pro” or just a Monte Carlo baller with an affinity for the game.
You might remember that Hansen, along with Tom Dwan, skipped Day 2 of the WSOP Main Event this year because of a massive Open-Face Chinese game that was running at Aria. While we’ll never know the exact numbers, Hansen was purportedly a big winner, which could have meant hundreds of thousands in profit or more.
Of course Hansen still has that whole losing $11 million since Full Tilt Poker relaunched thing to deal with but it doesn't hurt to win a few million playing backgammon or OFC.
2) Licensed Party Poker to Host Biggest Online Tourney in NJ
So Party Poker is planning on running a $50,000 GTD tournament this Sunday on it’s U.S.-facing site.
That might not seem like a big deal when the international PokerStars is running $1 million GTD on Sundays but it will actually be the biggest online tournament ever held on a licensed poker site in New Jersey.
It’s a pretty big deal and could a major step for online poker in the area. It will be interesting to see what kind of turnout Party Poker gets for the tournament.
If the easily make the guarantee we could see an even bigger Sunday major in New Jersey in the upcoming months.
If you’re in New Jersey and want to take a crack at that $50k prizepool just head over to the nj.partypoker.com and pony up the $200 buy-in.
Of course there’s going to be plenty of competition for the New Jersey online market and the WSOP online site is already planning a huge $250,000 GTD invitational freeroll for January.
It’s certainly an exciting time to be a New Jersey grinder.
3) Video: An Isildur1 Bluff Goes Very, Very Wrong
First off, let’s get something clear: We’re big Isildur1 fans here at PL. The guy is a walking headline machine and it’s practically impossible not to root for a guy who has the capacity to go on million-dollar swings.
That said, this video from the WSOPE in 2009 always cracks us up. It’s pretty much the epitome of a bluff gone bad. The most amazing thing is Blom almost gets his opponent to lay down trip aces.
