The History of WPT Global: A Skyrocket Journey from 2022 to 2025

When WPT launched its own WPT Global room in 2022, no one couldn’t have predicted how successful this project would be. Three years and a lot of ambivalent changes later, WPT Global has become a major players in the industry.

How it started, how it changed and why it became so successful — read in this PokerListings article.

WPT Global Cash Traffic Dynamic as of August 2025

For the first few years, WPT Global worked to attract as many players as possible. This tactic paid off in March 2024 when the room (somewhat unexpectedly) became the third in cash games traffic among trackable poker websites.

At that time, it had an average of 2.2K players in cash games for seven days — in comparison, GGPoker had 11K and PokerStars had 3.3K — and by August 13th, 2025 it had grown to 2.4K.

We combined detailed information from open sources in the tablet.

The Beginning of WPT Global

WPT Global appeared on the market 20 years after the WPT brand was founded. It was a side-project, something that would create a new competitor for PokerStars and GGPoker in specific countries but also — it was a way for WPT to create its own platform for online satellites and promotions for the World Poker Tour live series.

At the start, WPTG was all bright and shiny, full of brand colors and without a dark theme for users. Checking the lobby wasn’t available from restricted jurisdictions and the website worked for only 85 countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, a few European and a many American and Asian territories.

From the start, the room offered players NLHE and Short Deck cash games, including fast fold poker, and multi-table tournaments with buy-ins in US Dollar and Chinese Yuan. The stakes were up to ¥200/400/800 in NLHE cash games while the tournament schedule was full of MTT with up to $550 buy-ins and $100,000 guarantees.

Among the room’s advantages was cryptocurrencies and Luxon Pay availability, huge recreational traffic from Asia, no deposit bonus of $110 and a welcome bonus 100% up to $1,200.

WPT Global also had an unique AI matchmaking system for cash games, which considers players’ levels close to the cyber sports system. As a grand opening promotion, WPT Global launched the $1 for $1 Million event. It didn’t have any rake and the brand brought a few ambassadors, including Phil Ivey on board for the promotion.

The event was a huge success — it attracted 51,415 entries with 6,684 players going to Day 2, which ended up with player nicknamed 嗅也也 winning the entire thing and taking home a $100,000 prize.

From that moment on, WPT Global was riding a wave that allowed it to reach a whole new level.

Major Changes on WPT Global Between 2022 and 2025

A few months after their $1 for $1 Million success, WPT Global started making changes not only in its offers but in design. Here’s a few worth mentioning.

The room held multiple online series, including:

  • 2022 — WPT Summer Festival
  • 2022-2023 — WPT Global Winter Festival
  • 2024 — Knockout Series, Warm Up Poker Festival, Spring Festival, WPT Global Games
  • 2025 — New Spring Series Lunar Edition

After establishing a foothold in the market, WPT Global also launched regular satellites and journey promos such as Passport Dollars for live events — for example:

  • WPT World Championship in 2022
  • WPT Prime and WPT Voyage in 2023
  • WPT Passport Qualifier for Triton Jeju in 2025
  • Red Dragon Championship in 2025

As of August 2025, WPT Global already had an abundance of qualifiers to live series including Triton, WPT Slovakia, Malta Poker Festival, etc.

In 2024, for the first time ever, the room launched the Player of the Year Leaderboard and reduced rakeback for regulars to encourage amateur and recreational players.

The same year, WPT Global became a title sponsor for the Triton Poker Series integrating itself into the high roller niche. Their first ever partner event — $25K WPT Global Ultimate Slam — collected 170 entries and was conquered by Brian Kim who took home $941K.

In 2025, WPT Global added more options for bounty lovers, including the Weekly Golden Bounty Championship, and the Lunar Festival, Lantern Festival, and WPT Daily Asia tournaments for the Asian market. It also (finally) discovered dark mode and made the lobby available from any country but without changes to acceptable jurisdictions.
