Jason Su is someone that has had a unique real money poker experience, starting his poker journey in the City of Angels playing at the legendary Commerce Casino, finding his first recorded cash in 2005 $340 Heavenly Hold’em event when he came 13th out of 509 runners to get a $1,478 cash. This ultimately proved to be the start of live earnings which exceeded $700,000 and led Jason to pursue off the felt as well as on them.

His First Big Score

The Boulder-native didn’t have to wait long till his first big score, as he won the $1,060 Bayou Poker Challenge in New Orleans in his second recorded cash, taking home a sizeable $157,715 and would go on to become a regular in the World Series of Poker scene as well as the Las Vegas MTT circuit.

Jason Su - Poker With a Presence

It was during these early days of Jason’s poker career that the inspiration for his book came, as he became enamored with finding out how to unlock his peak mental performance. “For my first eight or nine years of playing poker, I had maybe ten sessions where I felt completely ‘in the zone, where I played better than I thought I was capable of, without even seeming to try,” he told Pokernews in 2020. “The idea of trying to reach this state of consciousness became an interest of mine, and Poker with a Presence is my attempt to demystify this subject using concrete markets that we can lean on to get into that state.”

Finding the Winners Podium Again

Su has clearly shown his poker ability, as he has continuously adapted to the ever-changing landscape of poker to keep scoring deep runs. His most notable score has seen him come 129th in the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event, bagging a notable $41,816. He would find the winners podium again in August 2015, as he won the $400 Kickoff Event in the Colorado Poker Championships, gaining a great return on investment of $36,014. The following year he would even go one better, winning the Colorado Poker Championship Main Event, turning his $1,100 buy-in into a $43,198 score.

In 2022 Jason shows no sign of slowing down, as he came whiskers away from grabbing a World Series of Poker Circuit Ring. He came 2nd in the WSOPC Calgary Main Event, walking away with the second biggest cash of his career in a $145,609 bankroll booster. He was most lately in the news in his coaching of Ebony Kenney as she went to the Triton Poker Series in Cyprus, having notable deep runs despite taking a huge jump in stakes.

The Importance of Embracing Your Emotions

Jason has put a lot of time into studying the mental aspects of poker, joining the same class as Jared Tendler in his ability to help students overcome emotional barriers and become the best poker player they can be. He said to Pokenews: “As humans, we aren’t capable of detaching from our emotions. When we try to pack away a feeling to deal with later, the emotion still gets expressed through our behavior, often resulting in poor play. When we embrace our emotions, even for just a second, we free up that energy and clear our emotional dashboard. From there, nothing is siphoning away our energy, and we can focus completely on playing our best poker.”

Maybe he is biased after releasing his book or coaching a player playing in the highest stakes tournament series on the planet, but he is a big believer in getting coaching sooner rather than later. “By far the biggest thing that altered my career earnings was hiring my first coach in 2008, and by far the biggest thing that kept me from earning exponentially more in my life was not hiring my first coach three years earlier”, he told Pokernews.

“People who want to study and grow in all other aspects of life find and hire mentors who have already done what they are looking to do. Poker players seem to struggle with the idea of seeking out help. When you find someone whom you trust to give good information, every dollar that you invest into your growth with them is going to return exponentially more.”

Poker With A Presence aims to help players sit at the table without fear, guiding them to becoming emotionally stable and calm when they take to the felt and battle against their opponents. The book even received high praise from well-known high-stakes cash professional Matt Berkey, who said “I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Jason and I promise his wealth of knowledge on emotional intelligence and its application in a risk-based business is an untapped, hidden edge that few explore. I can’t recommend his work enough.”
