After four starting flights and two more levels of late registration the Main Event of The Festival in Tallinn attracted a total of 552 entries that are playing for €264,960.

The first two hours of the Main Event were busy as players had the option to re-enter and multiple players took advantage of that possibility. After two hours the re-entry closed and by then 552 entries were on the clock.

Peter Nordin Bubbles the Main Event

Oleksandra Shenderei
Oleksandra Shenderei

The first big task of the day was playing down to the money ranks with a total of 71 players earning at least a min-cash of €1,100. The bubble was a very short matter as two players were all-in in rapid succession before hand-for-hand-play could even start. First Unibet Qualifier Arkadiusz Liszewski busted and right after that, it was Peter Nordin who was all-in against Oleksandra Shenderei. Nordin had Q Q against Shenderei’s K K . The board didn’t improve Nordin’s hand as it fell A 10 4 2 J and as he left the tournament area all remaining players cheered as they were guaranteed a minimum payout of €1,100.

Oleksandra Shenderei was the last woman standing and will be the last woman returning to the main event tomorrow. She qualified for the tournament via WPT Global where she won a full package for the tournament including accommodation and hospitality package.

By the end of the day, just a tidy field of 30 players bagged chips with Agris Noviks having a substantial lead over the field with almost 1.6 million in chips. Other players with plenty of chips are Germany’s Sascha Manns, Sweden’s Kristoffer Winterstein, and Mikael Viggander.

Side Events Galore

In addition to the Main Event, The Festival Tallinn also boasted tons of side events as well. The Blackjack and Roulette events concluded last night which were won by Marek Kotelnikov for €2,372 and Johan Palokangas for €1,548 respectively. Also ongoing on Friday were the €1,050 NLH High Roller as well as the first of two days of the €250 Pokerlistings Deepstack (over 250 entries), and the €330 Open Face Chinese (37 entries).

You can follow all the action over at TheFestival.com and read up on our daily recaps here.

As was to be expected, Day 1c of The Festival in Tallinn proved to be the biggest of the starting flights with 250 entries overall. This brings the field up to 431 entries with late entries and re-entries open not only throughout the turbo Day 1d flight taking place tonight but also the first two blind levels of Friday’s Day 2.

After 10 action-packed levels, 88 players bagged chips with Gregory Bregy taking the overall lead after the first of four starting flights. Other players with plenty of chips are Sweden’s Sven-Ake Willix, Pal Oygarden and Meelis Meliste.

Playing For a Good Cause

Oskar Engvall
Oskar Engvall

Of course, The Festival is about Poker and Blackjack and Roulette – but it’s also about fun and meeting friends. For some of the players, it’s also for a good cause. Yesterday’s Charity Event, won by Frode Fagerli was an entire tournament dedicated to good causes.

In the Main Event, Oskar Engvall is also playing for a good cause. He has pledged to donate half of his winnings to the Swedish Breast Cancer Foundation. There is an unfortunate reason for this donation. His sister, who is the wife of one of our colleagues is suffering from terminal breast cancer. Engvall bagged almost 60k chips and has decent chances of making a deep run tomorrow.

H.O.R.S.E. and Half & Half

While the Main Event was the biggest tournament today, several side events ran alongside. For lovers of mixed game variants, a H.O.R.S.E. tournament with a buy-in of €250 ran and attracted 64 players. Another semi-mixed event started in the afternoon, the Half & Half which was Omaha and Texas Hold’em mixed together. This €110 event attracted 113 runners, playing for almost €11,000.

During the breaks of the Main Event, the tournament organized Flip and Go tournaments for various tournament tickets, including two $1,050 High Roller tickets.

Other side events running were the Blackjack and Roulette Tournaments – both of which played their Day 2.

Tomorrow’s Program

This night the Day 1d turbo flight will finish and the players from all flights will join together to play Day 2 of the main event tomorrow at noon. The tournament is far away from the money though as the first two levels tomorrow will allow re-entries for all aficionados of start stack poker.

Other events to start tomorrow are the Open Face Chinese, the €1,050 Texas Hold’em High Roller, and the Slots Tournament which is the third and final casino tournament of The Festival.

You can follow all the action over at TheFestival.com and read up on our daily recaps here.

In Las Vegas, the WSOP is being played and in Tallinn, our sister site is hosting The Festival. But let’s turn our eyes to the future for a moment, to August. That’s when the European Poker Tour will once again have a stop in Barcelona. After almost three years of pandemic abstinence, PokerStars’ biggest and most important EPT stop is back on the schedule.

From August 8 to 21, the EPT will be played in Barcelona. PokerStars has now published the complete schedule for the tournament. A total of 61 events are on the menu, and the €5,300 Main Event will of course be the main attraction of the tournament.

Other key tournaments at PokerStars EPT Barcelona will be the €10,200 Mystery Bounty to kick off the event and the €100,000 Super High Roller, which will be one of the most expensive tournaments in Europe this year.

Those are the top events:

  • August 8 – 9 – €10,200 Mystery Bounty
  • August 9 – 14 – €1,100 ESPT Main Event
  • August 14 – 15 – €2,200 ESPT High Roller
  • August 14 – 16 – €100,000 EPT Super High Roller
  • August 15 – 21 – €5,300 EPT Main Event
  • August 17 – 19 – €3,000 Mystery Bounty Championship
  • August 19 – 21 – €10,300 EPT High Roller

In the Thick of the Action via Twitch and Youtube

All major tournaments of the European Poker Tour Barcelona will be broadcast as usual on the Twitch and Youtube channels of PokerStars. From August 14 to August 21, the action will be broadcast live every day from 13:00 (CEST).

These tournaments will be available to watch in the stream:

  • Aug 14 2022 13:00 CET Estrellas Main Event Final Table
  • Aug 15 2022 13:00 CET PSPC Women’s Platinum Pass
  • Aug 16 2022 13:00 CET Super High Roller Final Table
  • Aug 17 2022 12:30 CET Main Event Day 2
  • Aug 18 2022 12:30 CET Main Event Day 3
  • Aug 19 2022 12:30 CET Main Event Day 4
  • Aug 20 2022 12:30 CET Main Event Day 5
  • Aug 21 2022 13:00 CET Main Event Final Table

Return to the EPT’s Place of Origin

With the return to Barcelona, the EPT comes back to its roots. The first ever EPT event was held in Barcelona in 2004 and since then Barcelona has always been one of the most important stops of the poker tour.

The last time the tournament was played was in 2019 and at that time, Swede Simon Brandstrom prevailed in a field of 1,988 players. Almost 10 million euros in prize money was distributed in that tournament. It is not unlikely that this sum will be breached this August.

The complete schedule of the PokerStars EPT Barcelona is available on PokerStarsLive.

The next big dates for the PokerStars Live Tour will be EPT Prague in December and the Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas at the end of January 2023, where the PokerStars Players Championship will be held again – a $25,000 tournament that is likely to play out over $20,000,000 in prize money. Players can qualify for this cheaply via the PSPC Mega Path or Live Pass. We’ve explained how that works here: How to get a $30k PokerStars Players Championship ticket for cheap.

Day 1b of The Festival in Tallinn at Olympic Park Casino and the adjoining Hilton Tallinn Park attracted 123 players to bring the total number of entries up to 181 with two flights to go.

After 10 levels of play 48 players bagged chips with a Finnish chip leader. Lasse Laukkarinen bagged almost 200k chips and is the overall chip leader after the first two of four starting flights. He told us after the day that he felt confident playing The Festival and was happy with the level of his play during the day.

He will return on Friday with the rest of the field to play Day 2. We’re still very far away from the money ranks however as even on Day 2 the main event allows two full 45-minute levels of late registration.

Alongside Laukkarinen multiple Scandinavian and Baltic poker players bagged plenty of chips – among them the most recent Coolbet Open winner Kaido Mikk, Coolbet player Heidi Bekker and Sarunas Abdrachmanovas from Lithuania.

The top side events of the day were the €1,050 PLO High Roller which drew 36 entries playing for over €35,000 and the Acroud Charity Event. With €8,000 in the prize pool, the winner of the Acroud Charity Invitational would get to pick which charity receives €4,800, while the runner-up would get to decide the charitable fate of the remaining €3,200.

Those were the players in the Event:

  • Karev Tralla
  • Svein Olav
  • Frode Fagerli
  • Mauritz Altikardes
  • Franke von Zweigbergk
  • Ylva Thorsrud

Moving Forward

Tomorrow will see Day 1c and Day 1b of the Main Event alongside the €250 H.O.R.S.E. Side Event and the Day 2s of the Roulette and Blackjack Events which each attracted more than a dozen runners on Day 1b today.

The Main Event Day 1c will start at noon while Day 1d will start at 8 pm in the evening. Day 1d is a turbo flight with only 20-minute long levels, giving players a last-minute chance to build a stack for Day 2 of the Main Event which will be played on Friday.

Blackjack and Roulette Tournaments Running

Besides the Main Event, The Festival Series had several notable events kick off in the Olympic Park Casino in Tallinn. The Blackjack Tournament started with the first starting flight and the Roulette Tournament also commenced late in the evening with 16 players in the first flight.

During the day the 8-Game tournament was running with 49 players that played for a prize pool of €4,700. Another non-Hold’em event was running at the same time, the €250 PLO Masters which attracted 63 players for a €13,608 prize pool.

Side Activities Outside the Casino

Players could not only enjoy various poker and casino tournaments during the day, but all package holders also had the option to join a beer tour through Tallinn. The Festival is not only about poker, blackjack, or roulette. It’s also about having fun with friends and enjoying life. Today The Festival sent a few dozen players on a beer tour through Tallinn. They showed them the best breweries in Tallinn, learned about the history of Tallinn and enjoyed some rounds of beer pong.

Some Impressions from the Beer Tour:

Tomorrow Day 1b will be played with several side events kicking off as well. Among them is the PLO High Roller for €1,050, the Acroud Charity Event and the final starting flights of the Roulette and Blackjack Events.

The most expensive event of this year’s WSOP is in the books – the $250,000 High Roller finished this weekend and Alex Foxen, who dominated the final table and took down the event, won his first bracelet and more than $4.5 million in prize money. Phil Ivey made yet another final table in this event as he finished in 7th place.

The most expensive super high roller tournament of the WSOP attracted a total of 56 entries and they played for almost $14 million over 13 days.

Daniel Negreanu Loses it After Bad Beat

The first headliner of this tournament was Daniel Negreanu who fired two bullets in this event and busted during the second day against David Peters. Negreanu, who was vlogging the event was all-in with T-T against Peter’s Q-T-suited before the flop. Peters rivered a runner-runner-flush to send Negreanu packing and the Canadian lost his cool, throwing his vlogging equipment across the room.

PokerNews got this incident on video:

Daniel Negreanu, who is chasing his seventh bracelet and was WSOP Player Of The Year twice already, remains unlucky during this WSOP. So far he has not reached a single final table and is down almost $1m for this World Series of Poker.

Ivey Makes Yet Another Final Table

Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Meanwhile, Phil Ivey is crushing at the WSOP tables this year. After finishing 2nd in the $100k High Roller he finished 7th in this event and made his 4th final table this WSOP.

In the $250k High Roller Ivey was eliminated on day 3 when we shoved all-in with Q-J for 10 big blinds and was called by Brandon Seven with A-Q and didn’t get any help on the board. He took home almost $600k.´

Alex Foxen Dominated the Final Table

The tournament was headlined by Alex Foxen who began the third and final day as the clear chip leader. He managed to turn this lead into a seemingly easy victory. With six players left, Foxen already had almost half of the chips in play. Brandon Steven briefly came close to catching up, but in a pivotal hand Foxen won more than half of Steven’s stack:

Steven opened from the button and Foxen three-bet from the small blind. The flop came down 10 6 2 and Foxen continued for half pot and Steven called. The turn brought the 10 and again Foxen fired a half pot bet and again Steven called. The 9 on the river didn’t seem to change much and now Foxen checked. Subsequently, Steven quickly fired a barrel worth one third of the pot. Foxen needed some time but eventually called. He turned over 9 8 for a rivered pair. This pair was good enough as Steven was air-balling with A 10 .

After that hand, Foxen had a commanding lead against his two remaining opponents and shortly afterward he eliminated Chris Hunichen with Q-3 against A-7-suited with two pair against top pair. A few hands later Brandon Steven was all-in with 5-2 on a Q-5-2 flop against Alex Foxen who only had top pair with Q-T. But Foxen rivered a better two pair as turn and river fell K-T.

This win is Alex Foxen’s first bracelet and he was more than delighted: “It really means a lot to me. It’s kind of been a monkey on the back. I’ve always wanted a bracelet. I’ve had some close spots and always been disappointed. This feels like a really special one to get my first in. To me, what means the most is the consistent performance at the highest stakes. This is one of those, so it feels really good.”

The poker year 2023 is still a few months away, but it’s already clear that it will start with a bang. The Bahamas will see the return of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) from January 30 to February 3. The PCA will also feature the second edition of the PokerStars Players Championships (PSPC). This will be an immense poker tournament with a $25,000 buy-in and a massive prize pool.

In the last months, numerous players have already qualified for the PSPC via a so-called Platinum Pass and many more qualification options are still open. We explain how the PSPC works and how you can qualify for the tournament at a reasonable price.

PokerStars Caribbean Adventure and PokerStars Players Championship

PokerStars Players Championship
PokerStars Players Championship

PokerStars was unable to make it this year due to the pandemic, but the operator is finally returning to the Bahamas in January 2023. The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA), PokerStars’ biggest live tournament for many years, will be held there from 22 January to 3 February.

As part of the PCA, the PokerStars Players Championship (PSPC) will be held for the second time. It has a buy-in of 25,000 dollars and PokerStars is awarding Platinum Passes for the tournament throughout the year as part of various promotions and satellites, as it did for the first edition. Such a pass entitles the holder to play the tournament and it includes flight and accommodation. The event is a pure freeze-out with no re-entries and is likely to be the biggest tournament in this prize category all year. In the first edition in 2019, 1,039 competitors took part and a total of $26.5 million prize money was awarded.

These are the dates for the PCA 2023:

  • PCA ME: January 24-29, buy-in $10,300
  • PSPC ME: January 30 – February 3, buy-in $25,000

About WPT Global

WPT Global Logo

WPT Global is a licensed partner of the World Poker Tour and is available in over 50 countries. WPT Global aims to appeal to a large player pool and offers a generous welcome bonus for new players. To this end, the new provider advertises recurring freerolls for new players, as well as for players who have been with the provider for longer. WPT Global offers players several features that other poker sites don’t have (or don’t have to the same extent). Among those features are:

  • NFT Avatars: WPT Global is the first poker provider to offer players the opportunity to purchase personalized avatars as NFT (Non-Fungible Tokens) through the so-called Poker Heroes Club. A total of 9,999 avatars of different levels can be purchased and resold by players.
  • Crypto Deposits: In addition to classic deposit options, WPT Global also allows players to deposit and withdraw using numerous cryptocurrencies (currently Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Litecoin).
  • Global focus: Similar to GGPoker, WPT Global has a focus on the entire international market. This means that many tournaments are offered in Asian prime time. For players in Europe, these may be inconvenient time slots at times, but WPT Global thus ensures that the brand is also interesting for the booming Asian poker market.

The games offered at WPT Global are based on the successful recipes of PokerStars, GGPoker, and Co. There is fast-fold poker (here called pace poker), many tournaments, and lots of short-deck hold’em.

Latvia’s Aleksejs Ponakovs won the $100,000 High Roller event of the WSOP, the most expensive tournament of the season so far and denied Phil Ivey his 11th bracelet as the American poker superstar finished second.

The $100,000 event attracted 62 entries and the total prize pool was almost $6,000,000 with the first two places taking home seven-digit figures. The field of this tournament was filled with super high roller stars including Dan Smith, Jason Koon, David Peters, Michael Addamo, Andrew Lichtenberger, Chance Kornuth, Koray Aldemir, Adrian Mateos, Stephen Chidwick, Marius Gierse, Dario Sammartino, Erik Seidel, Christoph Vogelsang and Shannon Shorr. Albeit none of the names mentioned finished in the money.

Kory Aldemir Bubbles

It was the defending Main Event champion Koray Aldemir who bubbled in 11th place. He jammed a tiny stack from UTG with 7-6 suited and Aleksejs Ponakovs 3-bet with A-T suited. While Aldemir caught a 6 on the flop, Ponakovs spiked an Ace on the river to eliminate the German. After that, all the remaining players secured at least $162,623.

Among the players finishing the in money were Ben Heath, Talal Shakerchi, Mikita Badziakouski and Nick Petrangelo.

Phil Ivey Losses Heads-Up With a Semi-Bluff

Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey – (c) Hayley Hochstetler / WSOP.com

After Ben Heath busted in third place, Phil Ivey and Aleksejs Ponakovs were the last two players remaining. The Latvian started with more chips, but Phil Ivey briefly took the lead when he called down Ponakovs’ bluff with top pair. But after a couple of hands Ponakovs regained the lead and in the end, it was a huge semi-bluff that decided the game:

Ponakovs opened from the button to 2 big blinds and Ivey reraised to 7 big blinds. Ponakov called. Flop: J 7 3 . Both players checked. After the 9 peeled off on the turn, Ivey checked again and now Ponakovs bet 7.5 big blinds. Phil Ivey in turn check-raised all-in for a bit over 27 big blinds and after one minute Ponakovs called. Ivey showed 8 6 for a straight-draw while Ponakovs held A 9 for middle pair. The river brought the 8 . That was none of Ivey’s outs and with that card the tournament was over.

After having won one bracelet during the 2021 Online WSOP (the $7,777 Lucky Sevens High Roller), Aleksejs Ponakovs now won his first live WSOP bracelet in Las Vegas. He was incredibly happy about the victory and told PokerNews that he plans on playing many more events going forward: “I’m really pleased to finally get the bracelet. There is for sure some good stuff happening right now in my head. I am getting better and better in life. I am coming for more events.”

For Phil Ivey, this was the 3rd final table appearance during this WSOP. After finishing 7th in the $100K Bounty event and coming 3rd in the Stud Championship, he now was only one spot away from winning his 11th bracelet.

When it comes to poker, Brazil is among the leading countries in the game and it’s no different in the online poker universe. On Sunday night (June 12th), one of Brazil’s top poker players, Bruno Foster, took first place in the WPT Global ‘Influencers Tournament’.

In a 4-hour-long tournament, Foster overcame a field of 34 competitors composed of poker influencers from around the world and the winner of each one’s qualifying freeroll leading up to the final. Foster was one of three Brazilians to take part. He was joined by the founder and presenter of RegLife, Mário Junior, and one of the leading names in women’s poker in Brazil, Fernanda Lopes.

Bruno Foster

“It was surreal to win this tournament, I feel like I’m on cloud nine,” said Foster after his victory. “I had a difficult moment at the beginning of the tournament where I had to bluff a lot to keep myself alive, but then everything started to get better for me. I kept trying to manage pressure and squeeze all my opponents and it worked.

“There was a moment when I managed to double through Tom Dwan, then he doubled through me and in the third clash I was able to eliminate him from the tournament. This moment was also very cool because I managed to eliminate a guy who I have always considered an idol in poker.”

The second phase of the ‘Influencer Tournament’, a ‘Winner-Takes-All’ event, saw Foster cash for an incredible US$100,000; but it didn’t stop there. He also won $25,000 for being the top-placed influencer in the tournament, plus a US$2,000 bounty for each fellow influencer he eliminated.

In addition to Foster, Fernanda Lopes, Mário Junior and Tom Dwan, other big names such as Phil Ivey, Damian Salas, Cristian Stival, DJ Steve Aoki, YouTuber Brad Owen and actress Lynn Gilmartin, among others, were also part of the ‘Influencers Tournament’.

How the Tournament Worked

The Influencer Tournament was divided into two phases. In the first phase, held between May 30th and June 11th, 17 influencers hosted freerolls for their followers, with a guaranteed prize pool of US$10,000. In addition to the cash prize, the winner of each tournament received an entry to the second phase, the ‘Influencers Main Event’. To make the freerolls even more dynamic, each influencer had a bounty of US$1,000 on their heads which was won by whoever managed to eliminate them.

Phase two, played on June 12th, saw all 17 influencers and the winners of the freerolls from phase one compete for the grand prize of US$100,000.

In the final, the bounty for eliminating each influencer was doubled to US$2,000. Additionally, the influencer to last the longest in the tournament earned US$25,000.

Even with the ‘Influencer Tournament’ coming to an end, stay tuned to all up-coming events to be played on the WPT Global app, with different buy-ins suitable for all types of poker audiences.

This week GGPoker introduced two new members of its GGTeam – Jeff Gross and Ali Nejad. Both will represent the world’s largest online poker room both live and online in the future.

Jeff Gross gets the role Voice of GGPoker and Ali Nejad becomes GGPoker Media Ambassador. The two join other GGPoker brand ambassadors such as Daniel Negreanu, Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, Jason Koon and Fedor Holz. According to GGPooker, the ambassadors’ mission is to create new content that will appeal to new communities of players and help grow the game of poker – such as via streams or live events.

Jeff Gross

Podcaster and Streamer Jeff Gross

Jeff Gross was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and these days he lives in several residences, including Miami, Las Vegas, and Brazil. Gross started playing poker at the age of 14 and has earned more than $5 million in tournaments during his career. In the process, he has reached seven WSOP final tables so far. First and foremost, however, Jeff Gross is an avid podcaster and streamer and one of the biggest poker streamers on Twitch.

Ali Nejad

Commentator Legend Ali Nejad

Californian Ali Nejad is arguably the most famous poker broadcaster in the world. He became known for shows like Poker After Dark, the National Heads-Up Poker Championship, the World Series of Poker on ESPN, and broadcasts of the World Poker Tour – all of which Nejad has commentated behind the camera. Most recently, Ali Nejad has hosted the Triton Super High Roller tournaments, both commentating on the live action and interviewing the players.

Jeff Gross, who was still a PokerStars ambassador until 2019, is excited about the new collaboration, “I am thrilled to be joining GGPoker. It’s an amazing time right now for poker and GG is leading the way. I am looking forward to being a brand ambassador as well as hosting the best tournament on the internet; the weekly $10,300 Super MILLION$, with final tables broadcast every Tuesday!”

Daniel Negreanu, who has been a Global Ambassador for GGPoker for a long time now, is excited to welcome Gross and Nejad to Team GG: “GGPoker is the world’s biggest online poker room, but that doesn’t mean we’re not focused on growing even bigger! Adding two of poker’s best contest-creating personalities to the GGTeam means we’ll better entertain our existing customers while broadening the game to reach new ones.”

The news of Gross and Nejad joining Team GGPoker comes at a time when GGPoker appears to be cutting ties with a former brand ambassador. After Dan Bilzerian made disparaging remarks about poker players in a podcast (“They are fucking nerds!”), his profile picture disappeared from the site and it seems the online poker giant is done with the self-proclaimed king of Instagram. Gross and Nejad are definitely good reinforcements for GGPoker.

With only 95 entries the $10,000 Stud Championship was one of the smaller WSOP events this year with a prize pool just shy of $900,000. After three days of action and an intense battle at the final table, Adam Friedman won the event against Jean Gaspard with none other than Phil Ivey taking third place.

Friedman began the final with a substantial lead as he entered the final table with more than 40% of all the chips in play. He kept his lead throughout the day while Phil Ivey, who started the day with only 4 big blinds landed some big punches early in the day to make up some ground. After Ivey made it to the final three, he eventually lost two big pots against Adam Friedman – first against a straight on 6th street, then against trips, and was on the ropes. It was Jean Gaspard who eliminated him from the tournament with running two pair against unimproved kings.

The heads-up between Gaspard and Friedman began with a 6:1 lead for Friedman, but Gaspard managed to come back to almost even stacks. But within three hands (among them one costly two pair over two pair hand) Gaspard lost most of his chips. Eventually, he was all-in with AQ-4 against Friedman’s KK-7 on 3rd street. Gaspard could not improve his ace high and Friedman won the final hand and thus the tournament.

By winning the Stud Championship Adam Friedman captured his fifth bracelet and has now won bracelets four WSOPs in a row. He has previously won the $5k Stud Hi-Lo bracelet in 2012, the $10k Dealer’s Choice bracelet in 2018 and 2019 and the $1.5k Dealer’s Choice bracelet in 2021.

The mixed game specialist was very happy with his win and told PokerNews: “It is a real honor to be able to win this title with the players who have won it before me. Winning the stud high means more to me than winning my fifth in total for my own personal satisfaction. This is in my top three or four events. I have played thousands upon thousands of hours of this game. I have had really bad success in this event over the last several years and to close it out in my first real shot I have had is amazing.”

China’s Tong Li wins $25k PLO High Roller

Tong Li
Tong Li

The biggest event wrapping up this weekend was the $25k PLO High Roller. With 264 entries a total prize pool of $6.2 million was distributed making this the 2nd largest WSOP PLO High Roller in history only behind the 2019 edition which attracted 278 entries.

In the past, the event was won by illustrious poker personalities like Jens Kyllonen, Stephen Chidwick or Shaun Deeb (twice). This year’s winner Tong Li was certainly not on anybody’s short list of people to likely win this event as this was his first WSOP cash ever. “This is a dream. I cannot be more excited. I never expected to be the champion”, he told PokerNews after lifting the trophy.

Li outlasted many big names during the tournament, among them Daniel Negreanu, Ben Lamb, David Williams, Noah Schwartz and Josh Arie who finished third.

Li’s final opponent was the Austrian Fabian Brandes who began the final day with the chip lead. But after a short and lopsided heads-up battle, Tong Li won with trips against a straight draw that never got there and bagged over $1.4 million.

Steve O’Dwyer has done it once again. Earlier this year O’Dwyer, who has more than $34 million in live tournament earnings, shipped the Irish Poker Open. This week, he entered the final day as the chip leader in the partypoker MILLIONS Europe €3,300 Main Event at the popular Casino Barcelona before eventually mounting a comeback against Luuk Gieles heads-up to win the title.

O’Dwyer has claimed countless trophies over the years but he shared with PokerListings that this one was something special.

“I don’t have a trophy like that,” O’Dwyer shared. “I really like that it has a globe on it. I love maps and I love geography.”

Barcelona has been one of O’Dwyer’s favorite places to play. The venue is something important to O’Dwyer who no longer wants to travel to Vegas after spending many years going there as can be evidenced by the fact that he hasn’t play in the World Series of Poker for years.

“I always love playing here,” O’Dwyer said about Casino Barcelona. “It is a great place to play poker.”

O’Dwyer had a close call for another trophy earlier this festival as he was heads-up with a commanding chip lead against the formidable Teun Mulder in the partypoker MILLIONS Europe €10,300 High Roller. Mulder mounted a comeback to win the trophy in that event along with the €67,900 top prize leaving O’Dwyer to settle for the €29,100 top prize. O’Dwyer shared that he wasn’t happy with his heads-up play in that event but had a couple of days thanks to playing in the Day 1a flight to brush up on his heads-up skills and was more confident facing Gieles due to that than in his match-up against another Dutch superstar in Mulder.

From One Penny to €11,000 for partypoker Qualifier Lukas Boubel

Lukas Boublel
Lukas Boubel

Czech Republic’s Lukas Boubel qualified for the partypoker MILLIONS Europe Main Event at partypoker for just $0.01. He was living the dream by coming to Barcelona, but unfortunately for him, he just busted out in 18th place for €11,000 after his big slick ran into aces.

Boubel came to the Catalonian capital with his girlfriend and truly took in the experience as someone that typically plays low stakes. He shared with PokerListings that although he is disappointed that he didn’t go deeper with what he described as two mistakes because he was tired, after a quick break he relished in the fact that this was his biggest poker tournament cash.

“I was so excited to be playing with those I watch on TV like Steve O’Dwyer,” said Boubel.

Hopefully, for Boubel, this is the start of something big for the friendly player who exhibited strong play throughout the Main Event.

Final Day Action

partypoker MILLIONS Europe Main Event Final Table
partypoker MILLIONS Europe Main Event Final Table

The penultimate day of the Main Event concluded after O’Dwyer ousted partypoker Team Online streamer Matt Staples in 10th place when his ace-queen held against ace-four suited. O’Dwyer began the day with a small lead over Gergely Bartos but it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Irishman.

Bartos took the chip lead after O’Dwyer was on the losing end of the first hand to Daniel Smyth. Shortly after Smyth snagged the lead back. O’Dwyer, however, was back on top after he ousted Jelle Moene in ninth place. O’Dwyer extended his chip lead as others did the dirty work in eliminating both Duco ten Haven and Pawel Brzeski.

O’Dwyer appeared to be in cruise control as he was busy padding his chip lead until he doubled Bartos in a massive pot when his ace-queen didn’t get there against queens.

Bartos appeared to be the one in control at that point having padded his lead before sending Igor Picone to the rail when his fives were good against ace-trey suited. However, shortly after Taras Khilko send Smyth to the rail in fifth place, O’Dwyer was able to regain the lead once again during four-handed play. The lead then bounced around to Gieles before Bartos took control again. Gieles regained the lead before O’Dwyer was once again the table captain.

Bartos then delivered a bad beat to Gieles. A Cinderella story was in the making with Gieles down to under 3 big blinds at this point before he came storming back with two double-ups against O’Dwyer in flip situations. Shortly after, Gieles sent Khilko to the showers in fourth place and regained the lead after holding figuratively a chip and a chair. Bartos then ran his ace-five suited into Gieles’s pocket rockets to hit the rail in third place and Gieles held double the stack of O’Dwyer to begin heads-up play.

Gieles shared with PokerListings before the day began how special it would be to win the trophy for him. The Dutch poker player is a seasoned pro who was witnessed regularly playing $10,000 buy-in events online during the pandemic and had a great support team with him including High Roller champ Mulder and fellow final tablist Moene.

However, by the time the dinner break came around, O’Dwyer had a small chip lead despite Gieles winning one memorable hand with quad treys, and the tournament was soon over once the action resumed.

Before long, O’Dwyer amassed a massive chip lead against Gieles before the final hand took place.

It appeared like the game would go on with Gieles back into things after he nailed two pair with king-four suited against O’Dwyer’s ace-ten with the duo all in before Gieles nailed two pair on the king-four-nine landed on the flop. However, this wasn’t meant to be as an ace came on the turn to give O’Dwyer the top pair before a nine paired the board on the river to give O’Dwyer a better two pair.

Although Gieles was unable to hoist the trophy, he did win a truck-load of cash to collect the second-place prize of €168,000.

Congrats to Steve O’Dwyer for adding yet another big trophy to his ever-growing collection. That’s a wrap for the PokerListings coverage of the 2022 partypoker MILLIONS Europe. Stay tuned as we cover other big poker festivals around the world.

Day 2 is in the books for the partypoker MILLIONS Europe €3,300 Main Event at Casino Barcelona with the 67 returning players dwindled down to just nine hopeful final tablists with Steve O’Dwyer holding the chip lead after bagging 70.4 million in chips.

O’Dwyer was among the short stacks late in the day until just before the dinner break when he doubled up through Matthias Lipp when his sevens won a flip against big slick.

Straight after the dinner break, O’Dwyer, who is in 14th place on The Hendon Mob All-Time Money List with more than $31 million in live tournament earnings, went on a tear eliminating three players with two tables left.

He delivered a bad beat to Marcin Kreft when his eights hit a set against queens before sending a short-stacked Lipp packing when his king-queen held against six-deuce suited.

Meanwhile, partypoker ambassador Matt Staples had an incredible run until O’Dwyer put an end to that too when his ace-queen held against ace-four. A four dropped on the flop but a five paired a turn along with an ace on the river to counterfeit his two pair.

Just behind O’Dwyer was Gergely Bartos with 70.1 million. Igor Picone (66.1 million), Luuk Gieles (57.3 million), Daniel Smyth (52.7 million), and Taras Khilko (47.8 million) all have healthy final table stacks. While nobody is below 20 big blinds, Jelle Moene (30 million), Duco ten Haven (27 million), and Pavel Brzeski (25.5 million) will be the shortest stacks when the final table kicks off on Sunday, June 12 at 1 p.m. CEST with it broadcasting shortly later with hole cards exposed at the partypokerTV Twitch and YouTube channels.

Remarkably, Khilko cashed twice in this event as being the only player to bag twice during the opening flight. He took home the 68th place prize of €5,000 and is lined up to earn a lot more.

Many big names were among the 67 players out of the 450-player field to advance to Day 2 but fall short of the final table including partypoker ambassador and stream host Jeff “MaximusBlack” Johnston, Steven van Zadelhoff, Christian Rudolph, Alex Lynskey, Georgi Sandev, Ottomar Ladva, and Day 1 chip leader Ramon Colillas, who was out within the first few hours of the day.

From One Penny to €11,000 for partypoker Qualifier Lukas Boubel

Lukas Boublel
Lukas Boublel

Lukas Boubel qualified for the partypoker MILLIONS Europe Main Event at partypoker for just $0.01. He was living the dream by coming to Barcelona, but unfortunately for him, he just busted out in 18th place for €11,000 after his big slick ran into aces.

Boubel came to the Catalonian capital with his girlfriend and has been truly taking in the experience as someone that typically plays low stakes. He shared that although he is disappointed that he didn’t go deeper with what he described as two mistakes because he was tired, after a quick break he relished in the fact that this was his biggest poker tournament cash.

“I was so excited to be playing with those I watch on TV like Steve O’Dwyer,” said Boubel.

Hopefully, for Boubel, this is the start of something big for the player from Montenegro. We certainly hope to see him at more partypoker events, as in addition to his strong play, he also is very friendly.

Final Table Payouts

The nine returning players are each guaranteed at least €29,000 with Sunday’s winner slated to go home with a whopping €250,000 top prize.

It was a heads-up battle of the titans in the partypoker MILLIONS Europe €10,300 High Roller with Teun Mulder coming out on top after defeating Stephen O’Dwyer heads-up to win the €67,900 top prize at Casino Barcelona.

Mulder began the live-streamed final table with the chip lead. He coughed it up briefly to Vincent Cavailles before zooming along with a huge chip advantage during most of the final table. O’Dwyer wasn’t far behind by the time heads-up play began and eventually took a commanding lead. Mulder came storming back to claim yet another huge title and, of course, the coveted trophy.

The High Roller was a two-day, family-style affair with 10 runners generating a €97,000 prize pool with the top two spots making the money.

Mulder’s Road to the Title

The opening day of the High Roller attracted five entries in Mulder, Cavailles, Jelle Moene, Luuk Gieles, and Estonian chess grandmaster Ottomar Ladva. Ladva was the only one not to make it through to Day 2 after he suffered a bad beat with his cowboys failing to hold against Cavailles’ tens.

The second Day attracted five more entries, including two by O’Dwyer, who was busy yesterday bagging up a nice stack for the Main Event. Also joining the action were Gergely Kulcsar, Imad Derwiche, and partypoker MILLIONS Europe Main Event Day 1a chip leader Vitalijs Korhs.

Moene, Gieles, and Derwiche were all on the rail before late registration closed and the official televised final table began at the partypokerTV Twitch and YouTube channels. Meanwhile, O’Dwyer hit the rail just before the end of the late-registration window but had better luck with his second bullet.

Korhs was the first player out at the t.v. table in sixth place when he lost a flip with treys against Mulder’s ace-jack suited. Although Mulder extended his lead at the time, that was short-lived. Cavailles won a big pot off Mulder and shortly after took the lead by default when O’Dwyer doubled through Mulder.

Despite losing some momentum, Mulder remained composed and snagged the lead back a couple of hands later. O’Dwyer then ousted a short-stacked Moene when his ace-ten held against king-jack. Mulder then eliminated Cavailles when his jacks held against ace-eight suited to have about 70% of the chips in play with three players remaining.

O’Dwyer then sent the short-stacked Kulcsar out on the bubble when his king-three proved to be good against jack-seven suited but Mulder still had a small chip advantage when heads-up action began. He then extended his lead to a 3:1 advantage before Mulder came storming back to take a small chip lead just before the final hand took place.

Mulder flopped a wheel with ace-trey, while O’Dwyer flopped top pair with queen-five. Aces came on both the turn and river and Mulder check-jammed the river. O’Dwyer tanked before he eventually called and had to settle for the runner-up prize of €29,100.

Congrats to Teun Mulder for yet another big title to add to his ever-growing collection!
