WSOP champ's attackers begin trial today

By Lianne Elias

Two thieves accused of attacking 2004 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event champion Greg Raymer in the early morning hours of Dec. 20, 2004, went on trial today for their crimes. According to news network KVBC Las Vegas, the two men face up to 60 years in prison if convicted of all charges.

Kevin Joy and Deen Cassim reportedly attacked Raymer outside his suite at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino and attempted to push him into his room and rob him.

Raymer had just returned from playing in a high-stakes cash game in the Bellagio's infamous poker room, and was carrying approximately $150,000 in chips. The 40-something, 330 pound poker star fought the thieves off and knocked one down.

Raymer then called for security but the two men managed to flee the scene but were later apprehended by police.
