WPT returns to Fallsview today

Soren Turkewitsch was last year's WPT North American Poker Championship winner.
By Sarah Polson
A year ago, Canadian Soren Turkewitsch headed to the Fallsview Casino Resort at the last minute to play in a $90 satellite into the World Poker Tour North American Poker Championship. He turned that $90 into a seat in the $10,000 event, which bloomed into a more than $1 million win.
Who knows what the future holds as the event once again kicks off in Niagara Falls, Ont., today.
Many Canadian pros threw their $10,000 CAD into the mix last year. Isabelle Mercier, Daniel Negreanu, Gavin Smith, Brad Booth, James Worth and Erik Cajelais all returned to home soil for the competition.
Booth, Worth and Cajelais all made it into the money as well, with Worth making it to the televised final table.
Also up for the Canada-based tournament and adding some international flavor were Barry Greenstein, Allen Kessler, John Juanda, Carlos Mortensen, Joe Sebok, Victor Ramdin, Kathy Liebert, Humberto Brenes, Liz Lieu, Allen Cunningham and others.
Juanda was a televised final-table player too, finishing in fifth place. Cunningham made it into the money as well.
Turkewitsch took home more than $1 million CAD for making it through the stacked playing field last year. This year could just as easily shape up to see a multimillion dollar prize pool and more than $1 million CAD for the winner.
The WPT is already planning for a bigger crowd, extending the amount of Day 1s from two to three. Day 1a kicks off today at noon (EDT), and as usual, PokerListings.com will be on the scene to bring you the latest and greatest in tournament updates.
The tournament schedule is as follows:
