WPT Moves Championship Event to Borgata
Following reports of dwindling attendance at Bellagio poker tournaments the World Poker Tour has moved its flagship $25,000 World Championship event to the Borgata.
The WPT World Championship has been held at Bellagio for every one of its 11 seasons.
“We’re very pleased to name Borgata -- now home to four of the five biggest tournaments in WPT history -- the host of the Season XII WPT World Championship,” said WPT President Adam Pliska.
“With Borgata’s well-deserved reputation for running world-class tournaments and providing unparalleled service to its players, we believe this venue is perfectly suited to host our season-culminating event. We look forward to working with the team at Borgata to bring the WPT World Championship to new heights.”
The WPT has a big presence on the East Coast these days with three separate tournaments at the Borgata including the Borgata Poker Open and the Winter Open.
Bellagio will still retain the WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic in December.
The World Championship event at the Borgata will be sponsored by Party Poker, which is particularly interesting since the online poker company is trying to launch a U.S.-facing site in New Jersey.
Dates for the WPT World Championship were not announced but it usually takes place in May as the season-ending tournament.
