Review

There are plenty of poker books out there to help you learn the basics of Texas Hold'em and strategies for the game. Making the Final Table by Erick Lindgren is specifically a book about tournament strategy - what it takes to get to the final table of a major tournament and win it.

That being the case, a player must already know how to play Texas Hold'em and be familiar with basic strategy in order to benefit. This isn't the kind of poker book you can pick up as a newbie and use to become a poker master.

Instead it's a great look into the tournament strategy of a pro who's made several final tables and has more than one win under his belt. There's plenty of poker advice that you're going to find in many other poker books, but this title is tailored to apply specifically to tournament play, which sets it apart.

Lindgren points out the best mind-set going into a tournament is to think of it in terms of wanting to win rather than wanting to survive. Sure the winner of the tournament is the ultimate survivor, but most players who play to survive are just hoping to make the money and often that's all they do.

Instead, playing to win means playing aggressively early on and especially when the bubble is nearing, when other players are more easily bullied out of their chips as they tighten up to avoid busting out of the money.

The book takes you step-by-step from a brief section on satellite strategy so you can win your way into major live poker tournaments to how to play in the early stages of a tournament through the final table and into heads-up play.

There's even a section at the end on living the life of a pro with helpful advice for players who have gone on to win and need a little guidance figuring out what the sensible thing is to do with their newfound millions and how to handle the change in lifestyle.

The book is well-written and could be a great addition to your collection if you're looking for a way to apply Texas Hold'em theories and strategies to different aspects of tournament play.
