WPT Legends begins today

Scott Clements has already registered a win during preliminary events before the WPT Legends of Poker main event.

The fourth stop of Season 6 of the World Poker Tour, and the first major tournament since the 2007 World Series of Poker, kicks off today with Day 1a of the Legends of Poker tournament at the Bicycle Casino in California.

Last year saw a star-studded final table emerge from the 458-person playing field. At the six-person televised final table, Hoyt Corkins, Scotty Nguyen and Frankie O'Dell had the advantage of being on the well-known pro list.

In the end though, O'Dell got the closest to WPT glory with his second-place finish, while a relatively unknown player captured the win and the more than $1 million prize. Joe Pelton turned that win into two more WPT event cashes, one of which was a third-place finish, plus three cashes at the 2007 World Series of Poker.

Some of poker's biggest stars are halfway across the world checking out the Asia Pacific Poker Tour in Manila, Philippines this weekend, but there are still plenty expected to turn up at the Bicycle Casino for the WPT $10,000 event.

Shannon Shorr has already been in town playing in some of the preliminary events. He made the final table of the $2,000 No-Limit Hold'em event Aug. 20, going out in ninth place for a $5,630 win.

Other notable pros warming up for the main event with early cashes include J.C. Tran, James Van Alstyne, Davidson Matthews, Kenna James, Allen Kessler, Joe Sebok and Amire Vahedi. Raymond Davis also has two cashes in preliminary events so far.

Scott Clements reeled in a win in the $500 No-Limit Hold'em with re-buys, and Doyle Brunson's daughter, Pamela Brunson, also registered a win in the Ladies Event, giving her the top prize as well as a spot in the WPT Ladies Night Out filming Aug. 31.

Of course, what would a WPT event be without the ever-faithful, always entertaining reporting team from PokerListings.com? Along with old-timer Matt Showell, Erin Warner will be making her debut as part of the tournament team at the Bike.
