WPT Championship Day 4: Jaka Runs Good
Faraz Jaka took the 2010 World Poker Tour Championship by storm Wednesday, building a huge chip lead with just 18 players remaining heading into Day 5.
Jaka accumulated most of more than four million in chips late in Wednesday's Day 4 at Bellagio in a flurry of action when he five-bet all in pre flop with nine-three off suit and cracked Heather Sue Mercer's aces before filling up on the river to take most of Matt Stout's stack after he'd turned a straight.
He dumped almost a million of that before play ended for the night, but still retains the lead.
Jaka, who finished second at the Bellagio Cup this past summer and third at December's Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic, can sew up in the World Poker Tour's Player of the Year race with a sixth place finish here.
Although he has the lead, the final 18 is stacked with top players including 11-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth, 2004 WSOP Main Event runner-up David Williams, seven-time WSOP bracelet winner Billy Baxter, 2007 WPT Mandalay Bay champ Shawn Buchanan, 2009 CardPlayer Player of the Year Eric Baldwin, French high-stakes legend David Benyamine and the venerable Scotty Nguyen with a chance to move up to second on the all-time money winner list.
Seven players left also retain a shot at WPT Player of the Year honors with the entire filed chasing a $1,530,537 first-place prize.
All the remaining players are now in the money with 18th place paying $47,033.
The plan is to play down to 10 players Thursday and the TV final table of six Friday.
