The 2010 World Poker Tour Championship played down to 35 players today with several interesting names emerging atop the leaderboard.

For the third straight day, Canadian Shawn Buchanan found himself among the leaders when play wrapped up.

Now, the 2007 WPT Mandalay Bay champ finds himself challenged by a host of players, including Heather Sue Mercer.

Mercer, who successfully sued Duke University in a discrimination suit when they wouldn't let the one-time place-kicker try out for the football team before creating a successful cookie company in New York, has played a number of WPT events in the past.

However, this is the first time the poker hobbyist has seriously contended.

PokerListings Blogger Matt Stout, who already has a WPT final table appearance this season, and would earn WPT Player of the Year honors with a win and tie for the title if he comes second and Faraz Jaka comes no better than seventh, is also threatening.

Jaka is still in the hunt, as are David Benyamine, David Williams, Phil Hellmuth, Dave Ulliott, and Carlos Mortensen, looking for his second WPT title of the year and the second WPT Championship title of his career.

The top 18 finish in the money at Bellagio with $1,530,537 million set aside for first.

The 2010 WPT World Championship continues through April 25. For comprehensive coverage live from Las Vegas tune in to PokerListings' Live Updates and News.
