WPT Championship Day 2: Jaka Makes a Run

Faraz Jaka

Faraz Jaka's run at WPT Player of the Year became a run at the 2010 WPT Championship in Las Vegas Monday.

The San Jose native finished second at the Bellagio Cup this past summer and third at December's Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic, moving him into the lead in the World Poker Tour's Player of the Year race.

Monday, with several players still in the hunt for Player of the Year, Jaka pushed himself into a spot among the leaders on Day 2 of the WPT World Championship and now looks primed for a deep run.

Registration closed at the start of the event's ninth level, bringing the grand total entrants up to 195. A total of 18 places will be paid from a $4.7 million prize pool, including $1,530,537 for first.

While players like Daniel Negreanu, Gavin Smith, Isaac Haxton, Paul Wasicka, Tom Dwan, and John Duthie fell by the wayside on Day 2 names like Justin Bonomo, Brandon Cantu, Todd Terry, Cliff Josephy, Shawn Buchanan and last year's champ Yevgeniy Timoshenko joined Jaka near the top of the leaderboard.

In total, 98 players will enter Tuesday's Day 3 with a shot at the coveted title.

The 2010 WPT Championship continues through April 25 at Bellagio. For comprehensive coverage tune in to PokerListings' Live Updates and News.
