The World Poker Tour (WPT) has announced that Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas has joined its roster of host casinos for a new event that will be staged as the second stop of Season 5, which is expected to offer a total prize pool of over $250 million. The Mandalay Bay Poker Championship, to be held from June 4-8, will be one of the biggest events on the WPT's 17-stop tour in 2006-2007.
Steve Lipscomb, CEO and founder of WPT Enterprises, Inc., owner of the WPT series, said, "This continues to build our solid relationship with the MGM Mirage family of destination resort casinos. We have scored a trifecta with Mandalay Bay, The Mirage and Bellagio, the best Las Vegas has to offer."
In other new developments, Foxwoods Resort Casino, after staging some of the largest events in WPT history, will extend its involvement with the tour by hosting a new spring event to complement its fall World Poker Finals. The Foxwoods' Poker Classic will be filmed as part of Season 4 from April 6-9, and will replace the PartyPoker.com Million on the WPT calendar. The WPT will also be saying goodbye to Ultimate Bet.
Lipscomb explained: "We've had a great run with both companies, but the circumstances have changed since we elected to launch WPTonline.com, our own international gaming website. Although they will no longer be on the tour, we continue to explore future opportunities with both of these organizations."
Other stops featured on the WPT Season 5 schedule include The Mirage (Las Vegas), Aviation Club de France (Paris), The Bicycle Casino (L.A.), The Borgata (Atlantic City), Bellagio (Las Vegas), Gold Strike Casino (Tunica), Commerce Casino (L.A.), Bay 101 (San Jose), and the Reno Hilton (Reno). PokerStars.com has retained its position on the tour, hosting the PokerStars.com Caribbean Adventure at Atlantis on Paradise Island, the Bahamas. Lipscomb also announced the addition of two new tournaments but revealed no other details.
