World Series of Poker to go online?
By Erik Sylven
Gary Loveman, chief executive of Harrah's Entertainment Inc., has revealed plans to take the World Series of Poker (WSOP) brand online.
According to the Associated Press (AP), Love spoke about the possibility of starting a WSOP poker site at the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas on Wednesday.
The U.S. market is out of the question, because of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).
Instead, Harrah's is looking at other parts of the world.
"If you take a look at the legal landscape in continental Europe and the United Kingdom, there are countries where it's demonstrably legal and there's absolutely no encumbrance," Love said.
"Those are areas that are very attractive to us."
Gary Thompson, tournament spokesman, added that Harrah's would not enter the online poker market "where there are any gray areas," and that the market and legal conditions need to be studied before any further steps are taken.
