Review

The poker player and writer duo of Douglas W. Frye and Curtis D. Frye sets out to teach online poker in Winning Secrets of Online Poker, and for complete beginners it may not be such a bad read.

The book covers virtually all areas of online poker play, including a description of online poker, the different games you are likely to find online, the characteristics of the games, hand value, etc. That, however, is where this book hits a wall for experienced players. Indeed, while it is mainly well written and there are no real factual errors, its pages contain virtually nothing of value for anyone except complete online poker novices.

The main problem with Winning Secrets of Online Poker is that its authors are attempting to do too much. Trying to successfully teach Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, Texas Hold'em, Seven-Card Stud, and Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo in a 250 page book just isn't a good idea if you want your readers to come away with a deep knowledge of the different variations. However, for players looking for a book describing online poker, the games and the basics of how they are played, this book is a competent teacher.

In short, Winning Secrets of Online Poker works well as a guide for players just wanting to gain an idea of the world of online poker and to get over the first jitters with the help of starting hand charts and advice. For the seasoned player, this book has virtually nothing to offer. If you are searching for the "secrets" of poker, many books out there are a better choice.

The book consists of 16 chapters divided into four main parts. The first part deals with the online poker phenomenon; the second part contains strategic advice on how to play specific starting hands and adjust play to the different betting rounds; the third part outlines how to analyze your game; and the fourth part contains tips on discipline and environmental variables that can affect the game, such as T.V., radio, telephone, and other distractions.

The book totals 262 pages including the index.
