Griffin Benger didn’t win the 2016 WSOP Main Event but earlier today he won an event that’s been running nearly as long.

The former Counter-Strike pro closed out the 2017 edition of the long-running Irish Poker Open today for a €200k payout.

Benger outlasted a record-breaking field of 1,029 players, which was the most ever to play the storied tournament.

It’s not the first time Benger has finished a highly-publicized event in spectacular fashion.

Benger Edges Moldovan Mike Heads-Up

The eight-player final table didn’t feature a lot of high-profile poker pros but eventual heads-up opponent Mihail “Moldovan Mike” Mazilu proved to be a resilient opponent for Benger.

Benger started the final table very strong and quickly chipped away at Anthony Wickert’s chip lead.

Better luck this time.

It was at this point that Mazilu nailed a much-needed double up with pocket sixes over Benger’s A J.

In the hand Benger hit top pair on the J 8 5 flop. Mazilu moved all-in and Benger snapped him off with the superior hand.

Unfortunately for Benger, Mazilu managed to spike a miracle seven on the river to get the check mark and move all the way up to second in chips.

Benger wouldn’t be denied, however, and found a way to battle back. The Toronto native entered heads-up play against Mazilu at a nearly 2-1 chip disadvantage.

Benger flopped a straight against Mazilu’s pocket eights and that was enough to flip the 2-1 chip disadvantage the other way.

It didn’t take much longer for Benger to close out the tournament and claim the €200k first-place prize. Mazilu had to settle for €125k.

Here’s a complete look at the final-table payouts:

1. Griffin Benger €200,000
