WCOOP Day 9: Bracelets for z_balata, Big_Nemo and MiPwnYa
Three more events kicked off yesterday in the 2011 World Championship of Online Poker, crowning winners from Sweden, Canada and Brazil.
We’re nearing the halfway point in the 2011 WCOOP on PokerStars and action shows zero sign of slowing down.
Every tournament so far has satisfied, and in some cases doubled, its guarantee, assuring many of online poker’s health in the wake of Black Friday.
WCOOP-23 - $215 NL Hold’em [4-Max]
As Event 23 was getting underway yesterday Team PokerStars Pro Chad Brown tweeted, “WCOOP 4max has 1st overlay and short field. Still time to enter.”
In the end that tweet proved erroneous, however, as 2,622 bought in, beating the half-million guarantee by $24,000.
Day 1 lasted almost 18 hours and cut the field down to just seven players, all of whom returned today to find a home for the $77,349 first-place prize.
Famed online poker grinder Randy “nanonoko” Lew only recently returned to the online tables, thanks to temporarily relocating to Vancouver, and was rewarded with a tenth-place finish in this event, good for $6,423.
After just a few hours of play today z_balata of Sweden finished off his six opponents to lay claim to hist first WCOOP bracelet and the lion’s share of the prize pool.
WCOOP-24 - $320 Stud
Continuing the trend we’ve seen so far this WCOOP, Event 24 demolished its $50,000 guarantee and built a total prize pool of $101,100. That was thanks to the 337 players who paid the $320 buy-in.
Canada’s Big_Nemo ended up taking it down, earning the $19,461 first-place prize. He defeated the UK’s bilybob88 who received $14,406 for second. With that win Big_Nemo moves into second place on the tournament leader board.
Finishing third was recent Team PokerStars Online recruit Mickey “mement_mori” Petersen of Denmark.
Also cashing in this event was two-time WCOOP winner Dan “djk123” Kelly in 15th, Humberto Brenes in 17th, Soren Kongsgaard in 19th and Dylan “ImaLucSac” Linde in 46th.
WCOOP-25 - $215 PL Omaha [Turbo, 1R 1A]
This Pot-Limit Omaha Turbo 1 Rebuy/Add-on event was well-attended with 1,086 getting in on the action. In addition to those buy-ins, the field generated 756 re-buys and 246 add-ons to build a prize pool of $417,600.
MiPwnYa from Brazil emerged the winner, defeating Love2playU of the Netherlands heads-up to win the $72,996 first-place prize.
Also making the final table was Joel Adam “2FLY2TILT” Gordon who won Event 8 at this WCOOP. That’s his second bracelet, having taken down a WCOOP event in 2009 as well.
Other notables to cash in this tournament include Jonathan "MONSTER_DONG" Karamalikis in 19th, Ronny “1-ronnyr3” Kaiser in 49th, Daniel Negreanu in 62nd and George Danzer in 106th.
