The first ever PokerListings Battle of Malta is over and Nicodemo Piccolo is champion! BOM host Kara Scott is back to give you a rundown on how this retired Italian anesthesiologist managed to beat out a tough final table to take €35,000 and the inaugural BOM title.

Kara: Welcome back. Today we play the final table of the PokerListings Battle of Malta. By the time it's all said and done, we'll have the first ever Battle of Malta Champion. The Battle of Malta final table started with nine players all gunning for the inaugural bomb title and a €35,000 first place prize. Everyone fought hard but, one by one, the field was cut down to the final two. Giulio Astarita and Nicodemo Piccolo squared off heads-up. One would walk away a champion and the other would have to settle for the €22,300 second place prize. When all was said and done, it was a retired doctor from Italy who came out on top. Nicodemo started heads-up with a big chip lead, but Astarita managed to claw his way back to nearly even. After a few small skirmishes the money went in, with Ace-Queen for Piccolo sinking Astarita's Ace-Nine. After the stacks were counted down, it left Astarita with just one single chip. He managed to double up twice but the third time was a charm for Nicodemo, officially ending The Battle of Malta. Nicodemo: I started playing poker around 40 years ago. First with friends, but for the last two or three years I started playing Hold'em tournaments. I discovered Hold'em in 2009. Kara: It was quite a long day for you guys, the last final day. What does it feel like to take home, not just a title, a trophy and €35,000? Nicodemo: I'm very happy and very relaxed. I love the game. I used to play with friends and we used to play more than 72-hour sessions at a time. Kara: Do you have any special plans for the money? Nicodemo: I'll just keep playing more poker tournaments. Kara: I think he's rolling it right back into another tournament, so good luck in those and congratulations again. Our first ever champion for The Battle of Malta. So that's it for us, but you can find me on the full Battle of Malta recap video which will be up on soon.
