JC Tran has been in poker for a long time and he's had huge success in his career. But for the last three years he's lost money at the tables. In this video interview from the WSOP Europe main event in Paris Tran tells PokerListings.com that he had been burnt out on poker, but with the birth of his first child, and another on the way, he's got his motivation back and it's taken him to the final table of the biggest tournament in poker, the WSOP Main Event.
My name is JC Tran and I'm 36 years old. I've been playing poker since I was 21. I got introduced to the game by a brother of mine. I was asking him like, "What's this game about?" And he was like, "It's poker." I was like, "Let me come." He said, "You've got to be 21." So on my 21st birthday, I was like, "You know what? Take me." So he took me and sat me down in a 1/3 Limit Hold'em game. I bought in $40 at the time, $40 was a chunk of money for me being a broke college kid. And within a couple of hours of playing, I cashed out $100 and I was like, "Wow, this is awesome."
I came a long way in this poker industry. I kind of came on the scene 2004, 2005, hit a couple final tables and some majors. In 2006, 2007, I caught a nice heater. I burnt out on poker. I figured it's time to get married. I'm not getting any younger. I'm ready to have some kids, and I have a two and a half year old son now. When I'm on the road, the first thing I think of is, "Man, I need to get home, see my son, see my wife where I am happy." And now I'm expecting a second kid, and I realized three years of not winning any tournaments, "Man, where did my money go?" I started to take a nice big hit.
Making the final table of a main event, I'm playing really for my family. I don't care how much money I win. I need to lock up a nice chunk of money to secure my family's future as far as my kids' college tuition. My wife is a stay-at-home mom. I swapped a bunch of pieces with a bunch of my friends who are not doing well. I want to win them some money. I set a lot of goals coming in and I pretty much achieved all of them goals except this one. And this is the final table at a main event, which I did. And now my new goal is just to win it and pretty much put an exclamation mark on my career.
