Doyle Brunson Tribute at WSOP Main Event Day 1B

Published on 7 July 2013 by Pokerlistings 616

The World Series of Poker took the time to pay respect to one of the pioneers of poker on Day 1B of the 2013 Main Event. Doyle Brunson was on hand to announce shuffle up and deal and receive a bust commemorating the poker legend. Check it all out in video on

Speaker: So I have to admit, I'm always a little nervous being around this man to my right. Simply put, he is the living legend of the game. The goat. The greatest of all time. As we all know, earlier this year, Doyle announced he wasn't going to be playing any World Series of Poker tournaments. A significant milestone when you consider that, for the better part of four decades, he has been the defining face of the World Series of Poker.

Respecting the history of the game and the legends who made this event what it is, is very important to the World Series of Poker. That's why I'm very happy to be able to debut the open from the 2013 World Series of Poker on ESPN. If we could run that new open for the World Series.

Of course, we saw Doyle in a lot of those clips and his presence is always felt here. But with all due respect to the other world champions, this summer, as we missed him around the hallways, it didn't just seem enough to have a single banner hanging in the Amazon Room. We decided to commission our first ever bust in tribute of the man, the myth, the legend. Consider it a first step towards a more tangible hall of fame and World Series hall of exhibits in the future. We'll put this piece at the entry to the World Series of Poker, and then on to the poker room.

And Doyle, I've been hearing some buzz on Twitter that you might reconsider and I do have a seat guard right here for you. I'm going to leave it right here and I hope that I don't have to void it out.

So ladies and gentleman, for the most famous words in poker, we're humbled and honored to welcome the one, the only, Mr Doyle Brunson.

Doyle: Yeah, thank you. The trouble with this stuff, they usually do this right before people die and I hope that's not the case here. But it's one of my favorite sayings you know, you don't cry because it's over, you smile because it happened. So let's shuffle up and deal.

Speaker: But Doyle, the question on everyone's mind, are you going to take this? Are you going to have it?

Doyle: Yeah.

Speaker: Alright.
