Review

Most players know that in live poker tells are part of the game. But how big a part do they play and how can you use them to your advantage? Ultimate Guide to Poker Tells is one of only a few books on the market dedicated to revealing these tells and teaching the reader how he can use them to his advantage.

The book is the work of Randy Burgess and Carl Baldassarre; Burgess has previously written several poker books to which Baldassarre has contributed material, such as The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Texas Hold'em and Stepping Up: The Recreational Player's Guide to Winning Casino Poker. The pair's latest book is, as the title reveals, all about tells and what you can do to use them to your advantage.

Ultimate Guide to Poker Tells starts with context and anatomy, and describes generic tells in limit poker. Further in, the reader is presented with tells specific to No-Limit Hold'em and how to both spot tells and how to protect yourself from giving anything away with your own body language. There are some great picture tests where the reader is asked to draw his own conclusions depending on the visual appearance of a player. At the end of the book the authors have included a chapters on how to protect yourself against cheating and some "tall tell stories" about how tells have affected poker play through history.

Burgess and Baldassarre's book is an interesting guide on a very important subject for live poker players. The theories and lessons offered in the book seem well founded and are well presented. This book is a welcome addition to the small collection of literature that deals with live poker tells; the knowledge it holds could make the difference between winning and losing in some situations. If you play live poker then pick this book up - it may prove to be a wise investment.

The book consists of 10 chapters titled:

  1. How Important Are Tells in Poker?
  2. The Anatomy of Tells
  3. First Impressions
  4. Generic Tells in Limit Poker
  5. Tells in No-Limit Poker
  6. Test Your Tell Detector
  7. Becoming a Poker Psychic
  8. Avoiding Tells Yourself
  9. Beyond Tells: Protecting Yourself from Angle Shooting
  10. Tall Tell Stories

The book totals 197 pages including acknowledgements, introduction, glossary, resources, notes and the authors' bios.
