Twice as nice!: ElkY adds WPT title

Bertrand Grospellier

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier bet, raised and shoved his way into the history books at the 2008 WPT Festa al Lago final table, which played out last night.

It took just five hours for the Team PokerStars Pro to eliminate all five players at the final table and add a WPT title to his already-impressive poker resume that includes an EPT title from the 2008 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.

Despite entering the final table as the chip leader and quickly knocking off William Mietz, Adam "Roothlus" Levy and Nenad Medic, Grospellier actually got himself into trouble three-handed against Oddie Dardon and Nam Le. Dardon briefly took the chip lead but ElkY managed to get a bit lucky when his T 2 outflopped Dardon's A J.

Despite entering heads-up play with a 15-1 chip lead, Grospellier was likely not pleased he was facing Nam Le. Not many players have better WPT records than Le, and it seems like he's destined to take another one down anytime now.

Le quickly doubled up twice in the early going and Grospellier had to be feeling the pressure. Unfortunately for Le a third time was not in the cards as his A Q couldn't outrace ElkY's pocket tens in the final hand of the tournament. Grospellier received a cool $1.4 million while Le added $943,215.

Grospellier joins Gavin Griffin and Roland De Wolfe as the third player to lay claim to both an EPT and a WPT title. Griffin is the only player to have the triple crown of poker - WSOP, WPT and EPT.

The former professional Starcraft player also passes David Benyamine as the leader of the French all-time tournament money list. Grospellier now has $3.7 million in lifetime tournament cashes, while Benyamine is second with $2.7 million.

EkY's had a very profitable stay in Las Vegas for Festa al Lago, as he actually finished second in the $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em event that took place a few days before the main event. Grospellier cashed for $55,000 in that event.

Now the Frenchman will head to the inaugural EPT Budapest and will be joining his PokerStars teammates in the hunt for another yet another major poker victory.

EPT Budapest starts Oct. 27 and will run until Nov. 1. will have resident degenerate Matt Showell out in full force providing the best blogs, photos and interviews. Check our live tournaments section tomorrow at 1 p.m. Hungarian time to see how ElkY and the gang fare.
