Thirty-two outdueled at $10K heads-up

By: Christopher Hunt

Day 1 at the "World Heads-up Championship" at the Crystal Casino in Los Angeles was filled with bloodletting usually reserved for March Madness. Favorites were upset, underdogs won with prayers at the buzzer and when the smoke cleared and the marching bands finally settled down, 32 were left to play on today.

There were definitely some surprises. Already sent packing, head in hands: Todd Brunson, Chip Reese, Clonie Gowen, Daniel Negreanu, Mike Matusow and Jeff Madsen.

But fear not, some heavyweights did manage to survive and will play on in the round of 32 today, including Gavin Smith, Carlos Mortenson and Barry Greenstein.

Action resumes at 2 p.m. (PST) and will play down to the final eight still in the running for tomorrow's best-of-three final, the "World Heads-up Champion" crown and the $215,000 first place prize money.

The $640,000 total prize pool will be split by the top 16.

Every hand will be shown live and unedited for a fee on the "Live at the Bike" webcast, which you can access at www.liveatthebike.com.
