Review

The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King may very well be the closest thing to a suspense-action novel that you are likely to find in poker literature today. Author Michael Craig followed some of the greatest players of our time to compose this well written book, which documents the lives led and games played by poker's biggest stars, including Howard Lederer, Doyle Brunson, Jennifer Harman, and, of course, the man who started it all, eccentric billionaire Andy Beal.

The book takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride through "The Big Game," which began nearly five years ago at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas when billionaire Texan banker and insatiable poker buff, Andy Beal, immortalized himself by challenging poker's elite to a series of ultra high stakes Texas Hold'em poker battles. Beal, who aside from his success as a banker is also known as a groundbreaking mathematical theorist and aerospace entrepreneur, staked billions of his own dollars and was matched by the collective bankroll of some of poker's best, thus launching the highest stakes games ever held in the history of poker.

The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King is a far cry from the poker tutorial or strategy book genre. Rather, it is a refreshingly pure documentary book detailing the highs and lows of the suspense-filled world of super high stakes poker. It is an enormously entertaining read and is one of the few poker books on the market today that a complete amateur or someone not involved in poker at all could read and enjoy.

The book consists of two main parts "The Live One" and "Action," dividing it into the two major sessions of play that occurred during Andy Beal's trips to the Bellagio.

In total, it reads 282 pages, including the preface, introduction, epilogue, bibliography, acknowledgements, and index.
