Review
Arnold Snyder, the author behind How to Beat Internet Casinos and Poker Rooms, may be better known as a blackjack writer than a poker authority, but this book stands as proof that he is knowledgeable in both areas.
The Poker Tournament Formula is not only a well-written book, it's rife with valuable information even for seasoned pros. Snyder has dug deep into tournament strategy to put together a book that will make you look at tournament poker in a new light. He emphasizes patience, position and return on investment while building a business plan. And for most, that is exactly what a tournament is - a means to make money.
The book starts out explaining the basics of poker, beginner tips and the rules. This is followed up with some basic tournament strategy such as position and understanding the strengths of cards. To the experienced player this may seem like a waste of time, but fear not - it gets a lot more interesting.
With the chapter on card strategy and the following chapter on odds and outs, most people will have scratched their heads a few times as Snyder theorizes and explains; his chapter on the "patience factor" will also be a revelation to some. The book offers information on player types, re-buy tournaments, tournament field size and some of the finer points such as bluffing, table image and making lay downs. After all is said and done, most readers will be better tournament players.
This book is a great instrument for anyone playing or looking to start competing in tournament poker. The theories developed by Snyder are fresh. While some of the information is readily available elsewhere, enough of it is pertinent to make this a very useful book. The Poker Tournament Formula belongs on the bookshelf of anyone who takes tournament poker seriously and wants to improve his earnings.
The book consists of four sections titled:
- A New Approach
- The Strategies
- The Fine Points
- The Most Important Chapters in this Book if You Want to Make Money
The book totals 366 pages including introduction, appendix, glossary, recommended reading and index.
