The Great Dane triumphs at Aussie Millions

By: Erin Warner

Pocket aces added up to a $1.5 million win for Gus Hansen, who took down the Aussie Millions main event championship Thursday in Melbourne.

It took some good reads and goods cards for Hansen to eliminate newcomer Jimmy Fricke, whose aggressive play and seemingly endless luck earned him $1 million and runner-up status at Australia's Crown Casino.

After Frick sent Irish pro Andy Black packing in third place, the seasoned online player had Hansen's $3.7 million stack comfortably dominated with $11.2 million in chips.

Hansen would eventually claw his way back to even the count and enjoy the chip lead, only to see Fricke get lucky on a straight draw to edge ahead of the Great Dane.

It wouldn't last: In the game's final hand Fricke went all-in with a straight draw that wasn't to be and crumpled under Hansen's wired aces.

The final results are as follows:

PlaceNamePrize
1stGus Hansen$1.5 million
2nd Jimmy Fricke $1 million
3rd Andy Black $700,000
4th Julius Coleman $500,000
5th Hans Vogl $400,000
6th Marc Karam $300,000
7th Kristy Gazes $220,000

The $10,000 buy-in event saw 747 competitors who played for $7.5 million in prize money Jan. 14-19.
