The huge, 200 table poker room was action packed and the lines were long for tournament and player registration.
The play went on until the morning hours when tournament officals decided to stop the tournament. This rumour turned out to be false as one player didn't agree and wanted play to continue. Eventually the three final players made a deal and just folded or went all-in for the last three spots. The official first place winner is Andy Nguyen with $83,390 in prize money.
The lines for new player registration and tournament registration stretched endlessly onwards yesterday, with a steady stream of new players entering the magnificent poker room to sign-up. It seems that 99% of the players have waited until the last minute to register for the tournaments instead of using the option to pre-register online. But the big reason behind the large influx of players last night is because it is the cheaper WSOP events that will draw the biggest crowds. One of them being today's $1,500 Texas Hold'em No-Limit tournament.
The big names have yet to show their faces but they will appear today as the true competition for WSOP bracelets begins. A great battle will be fought during this year's Series as three poker greats are tied for 9 WSOP bracelets each, namely Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, and Johnny Chan. Who will come out on top? I put my money on Phil Hellmuth as he seems to be in good form lately and is a very consistent player. However, it is not impossible that all three of them will walk away from here without any bracelets at all, given that the fierce and widespread competition will make winning a truly incredible feat.
Hollywood is represented in this year's WSOP, as I recently bumped into actor and poker fanatic James Woods in the hallway outside the poker room. I would love to see him in action heads-up against Hellmuth, Chan, or Brunson. I assume Ben Affleck, Spiderman, and the rest of them will show their faces too.
PokerListings.com will continue our coverage today as we begin our journey to the next final table which will be played sometime on Saturday afternoon/night.
