Review
As we have come to expect from Matthew Hilger, Texas Hold'em Odds and Probabilities is a well-written and very informative book that aims to teach odds and probabilities as applied to the different situations that occur in Texas Hold'em.
The book begins by introducing the reader to the basics of calculating odds and outs. As the reader goes deeper into the text, they will find it mixes information and fact with examples and "Test Your Skills" chapters where readers can evaluate their skills on the subjects discussed in the book. Throughout Texas Hold'em Odds and Probabilities, most things involving probability and odds are addressed and are generally explained in a clear and inspirational way.
When reading the book it is easy to understand why Hilger is regarded as one of the great poker writers, and though he is not yet a legend like Sklansky or Brunson, he is well on his way with this book, a great follow up to his acclaimed bestseller "Internet Texas Hold'em". Having long since proven his relevance in the poker literature world with his skillful mathematics and trustworthy conclusions, Hilger's latest book can be read as a how-to when counting odds and outs.
As a poker player there are few decisions that do not involve counting outs or odds in some manner. Most players will even tell you that the ability to make split second decisions using relatively complicated math is one of the most important parts of the game. Texas Hold'em Odds and Probabilities teaches the basics of almost any situation a player is likely to run into, and if you have yet to read a book on the subject Hilger's book is a must for your bookshelf.
The book consists of 4 main blocks including, (1) How to Calculate Odds and Probabilities; (2) Applying Odds and Probabilities in Limit Hold'em; (3) Applying Odds and Probabilities in No-Limit Hold'em; and (4) Charts and Stats. It also contains an appendix, a glossary and a couple of blank pages for notes, something every self-respecting poker writer should try to include.
The book totals 255 pages including foreword, acknowledgements and other miscellaneous information.
