Review

Tales from the Tiltboys, just to set it straight from the beginning, is probably the farthest thing from a regular poker strategy book that you are likely to find. The book tells the story of a group of loveable action junkies known to the world as "the Tiltboys," the most famous being Phil Gordon, former host of Celebrity Poker Showdown, astute poker player, ESPN.com columnist, writer, ladies man, and all-around golden boy.

Together with the rest of the Tiltboys, Phil has put together a book that is so much fun to read putting is down is almost impossible. The book divulges the hysterical antics and telltale characteristics of the group's members, and informs on the games they play, the trips they take, and the trouble their behavior gets them into with their wives and in their lives. The most legendary story about the Tiltboys involves one occasion when they entered a ladies only tournament dressed in drag, though this story is far from the best in the book.

For a small taste of the logic involved in the decision-making processes of some of these giants of poker, and to get a feel for the mood of the book, here is a quote from Perry "The Baiter" Friedman regarding his determination to move all-in on every hand before the flop.

"Why don't I look at my cards? I'm playing Schroedinger's hand. Notice that at the point I make my bets, there is a superposition of winning and losing hands. Clearly these 'Quantum-odds' are far superior to my actual odds."

The backbone of the book is formed by the group members' constant attempts to put each other on tilt -- tilt, of course, being poker lingo for a negative state of mind that causes you to make bad decisions after, for example, receiving a bad beat, being "circled" by a fellow Tiltboy, or having Phil Gordon steal your date -- and the lengths to which the Tiltboys will go to induce a fellow Tiltboy to slide (which is pretty damn far).

Tales from the Tiltboys is a hilarious page-turner that belongs on every gambler's bookshelf, regardless of the fact that it does not follow the format or topics generally associated with more "traditional" poker literature.

The book discusses the colorful personalities of the Tiltboys and their exploits for 24 chapters, and includes an acknowledgements section, a foreword, a prologue, a preface, and an epilogue.

It reads 208 pages in total.

** The Tiltboys are Dave Lambert, Perry Friedman, Michael Stern, Bruce Hayek, Tony Glenning, Steve Miranda, Phil Gordon, Lennie Augustine, Josh Paley, Russ Garber, Paul Swiencicki, Kim Sheinberg, J.K. Sheinberg, and, last but not least, Rafe Furst.
