SuperStar Showdown: Kid Poker Strikes
For the second straight week Daniel Negreanu fell behind Viktor “Isildur1” Blom early in the SuperStar Showdown but this week he fought back.
After losing $120k in 1,200 hands, Negreanu finally started to get some cards at the halfway point of the challenge.
By the time the 2,500th hand had been played Negreanu was on top by $26,500. Not a huge score but significantly better than losing $150k in their first SuperStar Showdown match last week.
As per the rules of the challenge Negreanu and Isildur1 played four tables of $50/$100 No-Limit Hold’em on PokerStars last night.
The hands were indeed going Blom’s way early and in one of the biggest pots Negreanu flopped a flush only to have Blom go runner-runner to a full house for $27k.
About 20 minutes after that, Blom made an all-in push with A-Q and Negreanu snapped him off with A-K. Unfortunately for Negreanu a queen spiked on the flop and Blom dragged another $20k pot.
It didn’t get better from there as Negreanu went on to lose pot and after pot before finding himself down $120k after 1,200 hands.
At this point Negreanu was visibly tilted and later told Blom in the chatbox that he had destroyed several objects in his room out of frustration.
Perhaps the venting helped, however, as Negreanu started to pick up steam at the halfway point of the match.
He started by taking a huge pot with pocket kings against Isildur1’s middle-pair and then went on to secure a $56k monster pot after his pocket aces beat Isildur1’s top-pair.
Despite losing the biggest pot of the session with trips against Isildur1’s full house, the last 600 hands belonged to Kid Poker.
When the dust had settled after the 2,500th hand, Negreanu held a $26k lead over his rival.
Both players were cordial after the match was completed and Blom congratulated Negreanu on his effort.
Negreanu was surprised to learn he won the event and left with one last compliment for the Swedish online poker prodigy.
“Isildur1 is incredible,” he said. “I hope to do a training session with him one day. He’s the best.”
With the defeat Isildur1 falls to 5-2 in the SuperStar Showdown with wins against Dan “jungleman12” Cates, Tony G, Eugene Katchalov, Daniel Negreanu and an online satellite winner.
The only players to have beaten Blom are Isaac Haxton and the aforementioned Negreanu.
The SuperStar Showdown will be back this coming Sunday with online dominator Scott “urnotindangr” Palmer the new challenger. As usual PokerListings will have complete results and a recap about the match on Monday.
