Study shows huge online gambling growth potential in Spain

By Sarah Polson

The Media and Entertainment Consulting Network (MECN), a research company base out of Munich, Germany, released a study this week that showed that Spain is poised to become a big market for online gambling.

According to MECN, the Spanish online gambling market is expected to grow to €4.2 billion by 2010. The overall betting and gambling market in the country could grow to €39 billion by that same time.

Other factors that MECN listed as reasons why Spain will have such large growth in the gambling sector are increasing liberalization and the major international companies that are ready to expand into the market, and lotto craziness.

Businesses such as William Hill Poker and other online gambling companies already have agreements in place to eventually move into the Spanish market. Many companies have already started marketing in Spain as well by sponsoring football teams.

Those companies can be encouraged to look to Spain because many of its autonomous regions are working to liberalize the gambling market and open it up. This, along with Spain's already successful lottery market, one of the largest in the world, is encouraging for online gambling businesses.
