Sowers Soars, Pierce Crashes on 2011 Main Event Day 2a
Mike Sowers, Paul Pierce and Phil Hellmuth grabbed most of the headlines on Day 2a of the 2011 WSOP Main Event.
The day began with a total of 2,031 players looking to punch their ticket to Day 3 and hopefully a shot at the cash.
There were numerous pros on hand with Daniel Negreanu, Jason Mercier, Sebastian Ruthenberg, Ted Forrest, JP Kelly, Humberto Brenes, Sorel Mizzi, Dan Fleyshman, Annette Obrestad and Praz Bansi looking to make some noise.
NBA star Paul Pierce was also in the field today, looking to book his first WSOP cash.
Pierce has put on an impressive performance at this year’s WSOP but the ride finally came to an end midway through Day 2a.
Pierce had plenty of company on the rail, however, as Dan “jungleman12” Cates, Victoria Coren, Jeff Sarwer, Johnny Chan, Isaac Baron, Bernard Lee, Scotty Nguyen, Chris Moorman, Vince Van Patten, Dan Harrington and Brian Hastings would all be snuffed before the day ended.
Hellmuth Almost Sleeps Away Shot at $8.7 million
Phil Hellmuth almost had a dubious exit to the 2011 Main Event.
Apparently the Poker Brat thought he was playing on Tuesday and turned off his phone and put up a Do Not Disturb sign on his hotel room.
After two hours of his stack being blinded down Mike Matusow called the hotel Hellmuth was staying at and told security to go into his room and wake him up.
Eventually Hellmuth made it to the Rio and amazingly built his 7,000 stack up to 64,900 by the end of play.
By the end of play there were unofficially just over 800 players who survived to see the light of Day 3.
Notables Make Their Way to Top of Chip Counts
There were several notable players who fought their way to the top chip counts.
Heading the list are Mike Sowers (355k), Shaun Deeb (294k), Sebastian Ruthenberg (289k), Phil "USCPhildo" Collins (236k), Dan Shak (182k) and Sami Kelopuro (175k). Former PokerListings strategy writer Dan Skolovy also packed up 93k.
Day 3 will also see a couple comedic actors in the field with Jason Alexander (167k) and Brad Garrett (56k) bagging up chips.
Aleksandr Mozhnyakov looks to be the Day 2a overnight chip leader with 478k.
The survivors from Day 2a will go on to meet with the eventual survivors from Day 2b, which begins tomorrow, for Day 3 on Thursday.
It will be the first time every remaining player has been under the same roof.
The action once again begins at 12 p.m. local time and PokerListings.com will be there from the first minute of action.
