Sorel Mizzi Wins Prestigious Premier League 7 for $400k

Sorel Mizzi

Sorel Mizzi became the first Canadian to ever win the Party Poker Premier League on home soil earlier today.

Mizzi outlasted a tough-as-nails final table that included Scott Seiver, Dan Colman, Jason Koon, Jeff Gross and Brian Rast to win $400,000 at the Playground Poker Club in Montreal.

The Toronto native had a scare when he got heads-up against Gross. Mizzi had Gross out-chipped 9-1 to start heads up. Gross battled back, however, and eventually stole the chip lead from Mizzi.

Mizzi has a history of second and third-place finishes in major tournaments but he didn’t panic in this one. Instead he patiently grinded Gross down until he got lucky to turn a flush with Q 8 against Gross’ pocket queens in the final hand of the tournament.

Mizzi Beats Gross for Second Time in Tournament

The Mizzi/Gross heads-up showdown was actually a repeat of Heat 3 where they both outlasted Jonathan Duhamel, Dan Shak, Phil Laak, Vanessa Selbst, Dan Colman and Jason Koon.

Mizzi won that heat as well, which helped pave his way to the final table.

The overall win bumps Mizzi’s lifetime live tournament earnings up to $8.4 million. He also joins a very exclusive club of Premier League winners that includes Dan Shak, Andy Black, Andy Frankenberger and a handful of other pros.

Here are the final standings:

  • 1. Sorel Mizzi - $400,000
  • 2. Jeff Gross - $200,000
  • 3. Dan Colman - $120,000
  • 4. Scott Seiver - $80,000
  • 5. Jason Koon - $60,000
  • 6. Brian Rast - $40,000
